Hello! Just collected my key yesterday and I was going to plan my internet stuff in my new house.

After doing some research, I decided to go with Starhub.
Not really a heavy user (playing PS5/Switch in the living room), but I do need a laptop connected to the ethernet port for my work (video editing from the NAS), so I was looking at their "UltraSpeed 5Gbps" plan at $45/mth ($38.90 with Passion card).

However, it is stated on their website that it comes "With ONT + WiFi 7 router".
Did they recently changed from ONR to ONT as I was reading through this thread and some people said that the 5Gbps plan came with ONR? I'm not really an expert in this but from what I read, ONT is better than ONR? So does this mean their "UltraSpeed 5Gbps" plan that comes with ONT is really good now (in terms of functionality)?

An ONR integrates the functions of an ONT and a router into a single unit.

Hi everyone, sorry to trouble you all but I am facing some issues with latency, and was wondering if anyone might have a clue on how to help resolve it.

Long story short, I signed up for the 5GBPS broadband from SH, and they came to set it up last week. I purchased an extra unit of the HB710. It’s an old resale flat, so the setup is main HB710 in the living room, and the second HB710 (wireless backhaul) is in the gaming/office room.

So far, the WiFi speeds and coverage seems fine (to me, at least), getting about 1300-1400 DL & 1200-1300 UL in the living room; 900-1100 DL & about 900 UL, on iPhone 15 Pro Max for 6ghz WiFi. So everything seems ok to me, and working as intended.

In the gaming room, I have the second HB710 hooked up to my PS5 via Ethernet cable, using the LAN/WAN port of the HB710. Testing the internet speeds on the PS5, I am getting about 920 DL, and 100-200 UL. Sometimes, the UL speed drops to about 20-50.

Here comes the issue. I have tried playing 3 separate games on the PS5, and the latency/ping is horrible. I am getting about anywhere between 600-900ms ping, regardless time of day. I have the same issue while playing those exact 3 games on my phone (via WiFi). Sometimes, when I log into the game, see high ping, I’ll just disconnect the PS5 from the internet (from the PS5’s interface), wait a bit then re-connect, and the game reconnects as well and the ping goes back to ‘normal’ (about 75-90+ms). This has worked a few times but not always. Trying to do the same on my phone doesn’t affect the ping experienced in the game.

For additional context, prior to this, I was on SH 1GBPS broadband, and was running two Nokia Beacon 1 (same location: one in living room, one in gaming room). The ping for that I experienced on the PS5 for the same 3 games was always around 70-80ms.

Hence, not very sure what is causing this issue. I have called SH about this, and they did send a HubTrooper down yesterday, but all he did was change the WiFi channels and channel width (which I did try prior to his visit, but to no avail), and told me it was fixed already. Showed him the high latency in the game even after that but he just brushed it off and said it will be ok.

Anyways, so sorry for the very long post. Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this and found a solution to it, cos I tried googling it for the past couple days but can’t quite seem to find any viable solution.

Sorry again, and thanks in advance for any advice!

Short answer, bite the bullet and use Ethernet connection. Pay contractor to lay Ethernet Cables from the main HB710 to the second HB710. You can also try to DIY to save money.

Wireless is usually not a good option for PC/Console gaming.

From the lower upload speed inside the gaming/office room I can already see your wireless is not good. Often the device has lower wireless transmitter power than the wireless router. So even if may still have good download speed you may still have high latency for the gaming.

I understand this may not be what you like to hear but I tend to believe this is the better solution.

If laying Ethernet Cable is out of the question, then try MOCA adapters. If that is still not possible, try Power Line adapters (lower speed but may well have lower latency than WiFi).

Hi xiaofan, thank you and the info and advice. Yeah I think it’s about time I start considering the laying Ethernet cable option for my room.

Anyways, out of curiosity, when you mentioned the ‘lower upload speed inside the gaming/office room’, do you mean my 6ghz WiFi on my iPhone, or do you mean the upload speed on my PS5, which is connected to the second HB710 via Ethernet cable?

I am not savvy when it comes to home networking, but what really got me puzzled was that I had been using 2 Nokia Beacon 1s (SH 1GBPS plan) since 2020 (up until last Thursday when they came to setup the new modem/routers) with both a PS4 then later a PS5, and the latency was always consistent at 70-80ms, which was ok for my gaming needs.

Then after upgrading to the 5GBPS plan, and switching to the 2 HB710s that are placed in the same location as my Beacon 1s, I started getting this huge upswing in latency.

I do understand that things like that are not linear (due to many variables), but still wasn’t expecting such a huge difference, hence the post. Thought maybe I had something configured incorrectly.

Ur 2 routers are linked wirelessly? That may be the reason. Using wifi6 or 7 to link? If can set, try 1 by 1 and use 160mhz bandwidth if available. Best is to use wired connection between the 2 routers.

Also, is ur house very big? Ur gaming room is furthest from the living room? 1 router cannot cover the whole house? Try to position the living room router closer to the gaming room?

Ok, I’ll try to answer as best as I can but I am damn garbage when it comes to stuff like that, so I do apologize in advance if I misunderstand or can’t explain clearly.

Yup, the 2 HB710 are linked wirelessly, and they were both setup and installed by the HubTrooper, so I am not sure if it’s using WiFi 6 or 7 to link. This, I need to check.

So, for my place, the 3 rooms are all on the same side. The Opennet point is outside Room A. Room B is where the gaming room is, and Room C (furthest) is the master bedroom. Distance between Opennet point to gaming room is about 5m.

Previously, when using the Nokia Beacon 1, just one alone wasn’t enough to cover so on the advice of the HubTrooper, I put the second Beacon (which they gave free) in the gaming room, and WiFi was better for both gaming room and master bedroom.

Another odd and confusing thing is, when I stand literally next to the router in the living room, I am getting 1400+ DL and 1300+ UL speed on my phone, via WiFi 6ghz. But when I log in to the game on my phone, the ping is still 600-700+ms. Not sure what is going on.

Also, for now, whenever I get high ping in game on the PS5, if I were to disconnect the internet for a short while then reconnect on the PS5, then re-login to the game, I get back to 70-80ms latency. It will stay that as long as I am in game, and I don’t experience any drops.

Forget about the living room router for a while, the main issue seems to be the satellite (mesh node). You have very slow upload speed on the PS5. That may indicate something wrong already.

You may need to post the full SpeedTest results (not only the download and upload speed, but also the latency). I am not sure if you can do that with the PS5 or not. Better using a laptop with wired connection.

Another thing, you may want to put back the Nokia Beacon 1 to carry out the test again to see if it is still okay or not. If it is still okay, then potentially something wrong with the wireless connection between the two HB710.

All in all you have to carry out some tests to see why the high latency.

If you have high latency from the living room router, then the issue may well be different.

A phone may not be a good tool to troubleshoot the issue. For example, it may still be connected to the mesh node in the gaming room.

Better use a laptop with Ethernet connection to troubleshoot the issue. Connect it to the main router to carry out test first, then connect it to the mesh node to carry out test again and compare the results.

It sounds more like a StarHub routing issue with the high ping.

As suggested by Xiaofan, try with your old mesh. If same situation then somehow the routes changed with your new plan.

Just curious, how much are you paying for your new plan?

Ok, understood. About the PS5 upload speed, as far as I know, the low upload speed when using the PS5 console’s ’Test Internet Connection’ function has always been low for all users regardless of wired LAN or WiFi (PS4, PS5, or PS5 Pro). Apparently, Sony caps the upload speed on PlayStation Network for some reason.

Also, on your advice, I managed to find another way to run SpeedTest via the PS5 browser.

Did the test, and logged on to the game but still experiencing high latency.

It is possible that there is a gaming server problem or StarHub routing issue. You may want to put back the Nokia Beacon 1 mesh to see if you have the same issues or not.

U using speedtest to a local server to test the speed?

As others have suggested, it might be a SH routing issue. How about playing other games like android or ios games that are not ps5 games?

Good evening, @z3r0_1 .

1. Check your bill for transport or similar ******** charge. Request a waiver from StarHub support if nec.

2. As advised, revert to your Nokia setup and observe for changes. If there's improvement, it's your hardware. If not, it's likely StarHub's backend. Have StarHub Support escalate it to their engineers. Often, a higher tier Support will act as a liaison and report to you on a regular basis until the issue resolves.

Good luck!

Yes, all the lower cost offers for 10Gbps come with free HB710. You need to top-up if you want EB810v.
