Eric Khoo reminds me a lot of my late buddy … come from old money and go into film production … but I guess unlike my late buddy, he is not content to be known as a Producer.

I mean … my late buddy used to fund Mike Flanagan’s indie movies before his name became big … entertainment news do spotlight on Mike Flanagan, they might still talk a bit about his early indie works … nobody’s gonna talk about the Asian guy from S’pore who funded those early works.

End of the day, they both got money, they both do what they want … that’s pretty much it.

Well uncle Eric is a director

So he must have a vision
He must have capability of using film as a medium to express what he wants to be said

A money man like Medicis can pay a Michaelangelo to uhhh do a painting of God or something

But you need a real artist to do a good job
Medicis will probably end up painting a cat but it will look like an orange blob


My point is is Uncle Eric good?
With his money , he can and should be in conversation as top Asian directors doing such shite
But he isn't
& if you got the money , really how hard is it to get it done

Ilo Ilo won but largely English dialogue
Maybe its Chinese in cast & crew

Then I don't know what's his objective and what he views as his epitome or Everest

OK. They submitted a few of his films but they didn't make cut for Oscars
Guess it could be NOMINATED for best foreign film in Oscars is his epitome

Or does he aim to win at Cannes or Golden Horse or HK or some Blue Dragon thing at Korea?
If its that then his films are nowhere close right

Uncle Eric is so rich
Richer than many much more famous directors I'm sure - NOT the top tier like Spielberg, Nolan etc

But TBF the quality of his work ISN'T good
He can hire top cinematographers or DP but he either didn't or refused to

Putting the technical quality of his films aside , he can basically hire good script writers . Again he didn't or refused to
Some of their scripts, may seem simple but its very very deep.
Eric's stuff isn't

If you are talking about famous Art house directors whether Asian or Europeans , for the former , Uncle Eric loses out to them for sure

And those Film Festival circuits like Cannes love films that basically show the gritty side of society even if its fake but he couldn't or don't know or don't want to do for Singapore

No doubt his product is polished compared to others from Singapore but its still lacking

And I guess he mentors the Boo guy but the Boo guy's 2 films isn't that good too


And to add insult to injury, he's not Singapore's greatest director. That's Jack Neo.
Thats like Aubameyang not being Gabon's greatest footballer but that accolade is given to a Liverpool footballer. So insulting
