World Cup 2026: U.S. host cities reportedly chasing FIFA for millions promised by association

FIFA president Gianni Infantino even summoned senior FIFA leaders to Morocco for a crisis meeting on Wednesday

In 2025, FIFA president Gianni Infantino promised $1 million to each of the cities hosting the FIFA Club World Cup that year. Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the U.S. cities scheduled to host games reportedly asked whether they would also receive $1 million for hosting games and were allegedly told that would be the case.

Those payments, however, never came, leading to those U.S. cities chasing down FIFA for the $1 million they believe they are owed, per The Athletic.

Four executives on U.S. host city committees all told The Athletic that FIFA management continually assured those $1 million contributions would come. Despite that, FIFA did not make any public statements about giving host cities $1 million, per The Athletic.

"The four executives said this promise was made verbally by members of FIFA's senior management, and reiterated to cities in meetings, but it has not been paid, meaning several cities are now asking FIFA staff for updates on the payments."

A total of 12 U.S. cities hosted games during the 2026 World Cup. They include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

FIFA reportedly made roughly $15 billion in revenue during the 2026 World Cup cycle.

FIFA declined to comment when reached by The Athletic.

In a somewhat similar accusation Tuesday, former FIFA vice president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein put out a social-media post accusing FIFA of not paying the country of Jordan for its performance in the Arab Cup Qatar last December.

Al Hussein said the money the team was promised for reaching the final "has not been delivered yet."

He also claimed that he was told Jordan would benefit by endorsing Infantino in 2027, saying, "It was verbally communicated to me during the World Cup that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out."

Al Hussein said Jordan never has, and never will, endorse Infantino. "The whole situation amounts to blackmail," Al Hussein said. "And we refuse to give in to that."

That report and accusation come with Infantino already under fire by various governing bodies after his plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors leaked. That proposal was roundly rejected, leading to FIFA walking it back.

Though FIFA scrapped the idea, Infantino remains under fire. UEFA announced a boycott of the World Cup over the issue. CONCACAF has put out multiple statements criticizing Infantino.

Then on Wednesday, Infantino summoned FIFA's senior leadership staff to Morocco for a meeting, according to The Athletic. Specifics of that meeting are not yet known.

The issue took another turn Monday, as both the Welsh and English FAs announced they would not support Infantino's re-election in 2027. Infantino is up for re-election as FIFA president in March 2027.

He might not even make it that long. There are reports that some want Infantino out now. There are a few ways that can happen, including Infantino resigning from his position. He's shown no desire to make that move just yet.

If Infantino is unwilling to resign, he can be forced out if 43 member associations trigger a vote of no confidence against him. While that hasn't happened yet, increased pressure on both Infantino and FIFA could lead to more unrest among the member associations, eventually leading some to take the next step in removing Infantino from his position.

Aug 21 - Argentina's Leandro Paredes received a 10-match suspension for his part in a brawl after his team lost to Spain in the World Cup final while teammate Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games, FIFA announced on Friday.

A brief scuffle erupted at the final whistle when Argentina midfielder Paredes shoved Spain's Gavi to the ground as the European champions' substitutes rushed onto the pitch to celebrate.

Paredes faced three assault counts while Molina faced two. Both players were also fined $90,000 each.

Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi faced one count each of unsporting behaviour, while Argentina's assistant coach Roberto Ayala faced one assault count.

While Almada and Gavi received one-match suspensions, Ayala, who had apologised for his part in the altercation, was banned for three games, with all three fined $30,000.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) were fined a total of $321,000 for multiple disciplinary breaches during the World Cup, including the display by some players of a banner declaring "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine") following their semi-final win over England

The AFA was also ordered to play Argentina's next two home matches with spectators limited to 50% of capacity.

FIFA had said using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature was a breach of the disciplinary code.

The fines were levied for breaches of the disciplinary code including use of a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by fans.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee further determined that $100,000 of the $321,000 must be invested in a plan to combat discrimination," it said.
"The implementation of part of the sanction (one of the two matches and $100,000 of the fine) is suspended, with a probationary period to apply."
The decisions remain subject to appeal. REUTERS
