Hi Hardwarezone members, I went through the whole registration process just so I can keep my promise to the PC Dreams repair guy that I would put in a good word for him on this forum.

I was encountering extremely random blue screens on my laptop, so I went to quite a number of repair shops in Sim Lim Square. All of them just tried using the laptop, and looked at it. To my frustration, they suggested different causes for the problem. And to be able to pin-point the exact cause, they asked me to leave the laptop with them for about a week or so, and told me there would be a minimum assessment fee of 50-100 dollars. When each of them gave this option, I would leave the shop and look for another one.

Finally, I got to the PC Dreams store and to my surprise and delight of course, the repairman did not only check my laptop by turning it on, using it, etc., but also opened it up to check the parts. All of this was part of their protocol for troubleshooting. Then he tried to remove the added RAM and tested for blue screen occurences. Apparently, this solved the problem and they didn't occur anymore. He even pointed me to the store where I can claim the warranty for the spoilt RAM and offered to put it back for me. The best thing was, when I asked him how much the charge for that was, he said it was for free.

It may have been a pretty simple job, but I praise this shop because of:

1. The very friendly and helpful repair guy and staff
2. Going an extra step to help the customer. Other shops would start charging you once they open up your computer
3. Their ability to diagnose, locate the problem, and present a solution PROPERLY. I'm sure if it wasn't the RAM, he would have gone to examine the other parts as well.

Hope this helps some of you. Cheers!

Well, with this, I think I'd look for PC Dream before going to my manufacturer even when my warranty has not expired. hehe.

mac109, it would be helpful if you got the name of the repair person who served you.

I have a non-working XPS M1210 that I also want to be repaired.

Thanks.

Thank you for the compliment, here is the story from my technical specialist.

The laptop in question was a Sony Vaio T series having intermittent blue screen.
My specialist suspected that the RAM was causing the problem after running some load tests. The RAM was removed and it was working fine. It was also a Transcend MicroDIMM and the client was able to claim product lifetime warranty from the distributor.

No purchase was needed and the problem was not complicated in our point of view.
It is not always about money, especially given the bad reputation for Sim Lim Square retailers. Thanks for patronizing us, hope that we can serve you more in future.

its sad that quite a no. SLS shops do not have the vision beyond making quick profits..

i hope shops like this would survive and prosper in the long run instead.

Another kudo for PC Dreams. Like the original poster, I too feel compelled to come out of my passive reader status to register with hardwarezone just so that I can post good words for PC Dreams.

I went yesterday for my intermittent power-off problem on my Toshiba laptop. I was served by a nice polite guy by the name of Jerry. He immediately ran load test, and suspected that my fan/cooling unit is overheating. He then suggested that he took it to the lab to open up the laptop and inspect. Another one hour later, I received a call from him that it is ready for collection. He found that the fan/cooling unit was covered by a lot of dirts which most likely caused the overheating, and that it is still in good condition not needing replacement. While at it, he cleaned it up and it seemed to have solve the problem.

For all of this trouble, he with the consent of shop owner which I did not meet, did not charge me a cent as there were no parts involved. I have thanked Jerry and wish to extend my gratitude to PC Dreams for such customer service at its best. Your reputation is well deserved.

Since this thread does not discuss on any laptop products, it will be moved to ratings board.
