Sensitive Question on Employment

Hi Good Morning.

Just wish to check with u guys has anyone experienced discrimination by prospective employment agency/employer after one declares a "disability" on the interview form?

In other countries like USA, The American Disabilities Act make it illegal for interviewer to ask about disability BEFORE a job offer is made. What is the current employment situation in Singapore?

Is it better NOT to declare then?

Pls advise.

Thank you.

Had bad experience with recruit express also. All different agents from same or different branches will call you down to fill up forms over and over again. They have to understand that it is important not to waste candidate's time.

From my past experience, I only tried taking up a job from agency since my ORD, from Adecco. And that's the 1st job I had after NS, and worked for 2 years. The impression I had of Adecco is fine, except that it's kinda troublesome, as they need me to register/key in my resume/data into their system all over again. The job is logistics co-ordinator. I have low qualifications.

After that, I never find another agency again.

I just got a new job recently, as a sales personnel, directly thru the company, via the job site jobsdb.com.

As a person looking for jobs, you need to gauge your urgency on landing a job. If at relaxed pace, then if possible, skip the agencies. There's so many job sites like jobstreet, jobscentral, jobsdb, etc etc. For those who need a job urgently, try to work on your resume, improve the reading of it, choose some nicer words to use. Have a confident but not boastful description/expectation of yourself in it.

And most important, don't be lazy to spam resumes to companies. I spammed like 20 resumes per day, for sales positions, and I don't care if they have received my applications before. As long as I see their ad is posted on the day itself, I spam. :s13:

Interviews also just go. No go = no hope. Even agencies' one.

The company application form should have a section for you to declare any disabiltiy. And there should be some fine print such as if you falsely declare any information, you can be terminated based on such ground without any compensation as you had purposely withdrew your information.

I think it is serious stuff we are talking about. USA and other employment is not really applicable to SG market as we have difference practises.

So far, i tried not to do so and try my best to help them to get them an interview and leave the rest to their hands already.

Some advice i would like to share with the folks when searching for a job.

Some common errors people are doing:
1) Mass sending resume to every company they can find on various online jobportals

Reason: By sending out to many companies, you are allowing yourself to be exposed to companies, who might or might not hire you but this personal vital information of yours could be harvested for future reference by companies for unethical purposes in the future.

Advice: I strong advocate jobseekers to call into the company and look for the HR personnel for the position you are interested with which they are advertising.
Note, never call in blindly into a company asking for a position, make sure they are looking for cadidate the position you are seeking, if not you stand a high chance to be rejected.

2) A last minute made resume without vital information for HR personnel to look into and for comparison purpose.

Reason: A resume represents you, it speaks alot about you as a person and is 1 of the most decisive tool a HR will use to determine if you are the one they are looking for.
E.g, a resume with messy alignment shows you are not meticulous with your work and messy. Job description is too brief or even non-existent shows your insincerity in applying for that position. This is easily the most important but also the most common downfall of very good calibre candidate.

Advice: There is no standard format for a good resume, every industry has different style. Stick to your style but make sure have all the pertaining information needed. A well taken passport photo inside with all your job history and job descriptions in details to "up-sale" yourself. Make sure your alignment and font to be standardize throughout. Always provide credible reference if possible. Know what you are applying for and have the information that boost your reputation to be inside your job description or in the achievement section.

3) Never use a recruitment firm as they are lousy and inefficient, a blood sucker.

Reason: A recruitment firm is a company, definitely revenue is needed for successful placement in order to be in the business. They can be of real help to you if uses them correctly.

Advice: Choose a recruitment firm which concentrate in the industry you are working or looking into. Every recruitment firm has a niche. Look for the right one to work with definitely will be beneficial in finding yourself a job or opens up to option.

actually i think some agency good la.. it just depends on the consultant..
and some consultants are very nice, but it stops after you start working... after that they will show u attitude ~

well prev i had a job from mass power and then i wanted to resign because the job had really little things to do and i find that im actually wasting time there, i remember my consultant telling me before i will have to pay penalty if i didnt work up to a certain period so i called her and ask.. and then she juz practically scream at me ' u r just a fresh grad why u expect so much ' , before that she was really very nice! well, she also inform me last min that my first day of working change from jurong east to punggol (becoz my FM wanan see me there) .. which is .. super far from me..

There will always be some black sheep ard...

to say a word in fairness, recruitment consultants are working in a very competitive environment. i rmb going to one agency and just nice a bell "rang" and the consultants there started cheering and clapping loudly. this was because the company has just churned out the namelist for the top achiever for the month. i can imagine how stressed the consultants are as they have to meet daily quotas of arranging a minimum number of interviews for candidates and etc, which i wouldn't know since i'm not working in that industry.

in fact, there was a consultant who actually called me at 8pm on a sunday evening. it's like hello? you are actually working on a sunday?

Learn how to handle recruiters. It is always your choice to take up the offer.

Recruiters often has openings that is not open in the market.

I've had bad experiences with Recruit Express, GMP and Kelly Services. The consultants are inexperienced and totally clueless. They asked the silliest and most irrelevant questions and keep asking me whether they should send my CV for jobs I don't have the necessary experience in. A total waste of my time.

Lots of recruiters ask irrelevant questions. It is very frustrating to be asked if you has x experience when it can easily been seen from your CV. Let me tell you this, even HR interviewers also waste alot of time too, especiallly when it comes to pay. If the company cannot pay, they should ask you over the phone first. I also found quite a few companies were going to move office to an area which is too far for me but only ask me if it is ok at the interview. What a waste of time!:s12:
