Bandwidth in each household is shared. So if you got a number of person in the house want to use at the same time, and they are bandwidth heavy, you may need the extra bandwidth.

Eg. Dad --> Video confernce
Mum --> apple tv
Son --> Gaming
Daughter --> Skype

All are bandwidth intensive.

like what bro Loirev had mention, it depends on your usage by your family members. even 2-3 person in the home but intensive usage may end up slower connection.

a rough gauge is to use your current broadband as a benchmark and see if u need a higher speed connection.

Below is how i usually advice my customer on the type of plan to take:

1) People whom subscribe to 200Mbps are those who are already on 100Mbps plan feels 100Mbps is not enough thus go for 200Mbps.

2) If u are a 10Mbps user and is already sufficient, then 100Mbps should be enough for u.

what is the typical m1 fiber dl speed during both peak and off peak hrs...dl from US & europe...

I FTP from my server in Europe always hit 80-90+ mbps most of the time. This is 100mbps plan

I have made my purchase of Asus RT66U this afternoon and had my wireless set up.
But base on my result from speed test, below are the information:

Tested at 1700H LAN:
Ping:5ms
Download: 140.46Mbps
Upload:81.71Mbps

Tested at 1705H Wireless (line of sight less than 3 meters):
Ping:15ms
Download: 37.58Mbps
Upload:16.61Mbps

It seems that there isnt much diff vs my previous wireless router (Dlink DAR-655)
I have set to wpa for the Asus RT66U. Do you know what is wrong?
As many mentioned that Asus RT66U is the best, thus I made that purchase but doesnt seem effective.

my M1 line can sustain download speed of 10.5MB/s downloading a 10Gb game via homeplugs on Steam. Took less than 10 mins, as opposed to the estimate of 2hrs on Steam... not too shabby.

add: my mum is streaming show via PPTV at the same time and no lag was seen.

I think yours is 2.4GHz band wireless. That one is quite weak because of interference from other routers. You should get a 5GHz adapter. It works like magic because almost nobody uses that band. For me there's only one 5GHz network around me - mine.

Hi finalforce, my router is asus rt66u, dual band with 2.4 and 5 GHz. R u referring to setting the 5GHz ? I have done so with 2 diff ID. But can't detect 5GHz from my iPhone and laptop.

1. I'll be using homeplugs. Since my fibre broadband is only 100 mbps, can I get the 200 mpbs homeplugs instead of the 500 mpbs homeplug? It shouldn't affect the speed of the connection right?

2. The connection will be Fibre Broadband connection point --> modem --> router --> homeplug, right?

3. Where should I connect the cordless phone, is it to the modem or to the router?

4. What router should I get for this arrangement or there is no need for me to get a router at all?

5. Usually what will be the speed that I will get in this arrangement? 50 mpbs from the homeplugs?

Sorry for the noob questions. Thank you in advance.

1) buy the 500mbps model safer, as with any other electrical products, there is a factor of inefficiency so a 200mbps plug will not reach the full rated speed or worse can't utilize the subscribed bandwidth 100%. The 500mbps plugs have been known to be stable & works well for most of the people but your home electrical system also play a part in the network performance, if it sucks... a 1gbps plug also doesn't help much.

2) if you have all your PC/laptop systems running behind the homeplugs (inside room), you may position your router after the homeplugs. Fibre Broadband connection point --> modem ONT --> homeplugA --> homeplugB --> router

3) phone is on the jack behind the ONT modem provided by M1, your router has nothing to do with your phone.

4) if you are using only one comp and does not need wireless access, router is not required but if there is any other peripherals that need network access, you need a router.

5) again, this will be determined by your home electrical wiring condition. If it is good, you will have no prob attaining 100% subscribed speed like mine but if it sucks then worse case you can below avg performance.

Its the damn laptop wireless chip that is the bottleneck. You buy any router also won't change that fact. You need to use a dual band wireless adapter so that you will not be bottlenecked by the wireless chip in your laptop.

I am not sure whether I need a dual band router or just a single band will do. I will mostly be just using an iPad, sometimes I may also have a PC on as well via wired connection. Worst case scenario, I may also have a notebook connected via wireless but this rarely happens. I don't game, maybe video viewing, yes but mostly just normal surfing.

Any specific suggestion for a router for my needs? I try not to spend more than necessary.

nowadays laptop tend to be dualband compatible. if foresee yourself getting a new laptop or devices, might as well go for a dualband router. save yourself from upgrading again in future.

the default setup by Asus rt66u i think its set to AES + TKIP.
I set it to AES only though. you may wanna try that?
