Got a qn to ask.. for stocks like Olam/Golden Agri, etc. (those with oil palm plantations), do you subtract biological assets when it comes to valuing the company?

Their NAV may or may not reflect their true book value as compared to property developers or others

Like some batch of their biological asset might be lousy and hence lower value or better quality which results in higher value

That's the reason why Carson block short sell Olam

My 2 cent opinion

depends on whether u feel comfortable with the figure quoted.

I rather chiong companies with high cash per share.

agree with milo on this.
high cash per share can be verified, but biological assets can be variable depending on its quality (eg. oceanus abalones) and market supply/demand.

Cash/Share meaning the bottomline cash, cash from ops or free cash flow?

That's what I thought, but since the biz is like that, most of their revenues come from their biological assets, it makes it really hard to value the business. Wondering what metrics you guys use (if u were to use any) for such companies.

Noob at valuing coys here, need input :s22:

i always like to look at the Balance sheet cash.. then divided by number of shares.

If the company is cash rich with low debt, i'll do this:
(cash - total liabilities)/no. of shares...

Oh wow that's hard to find, alot of coys their current/quick ratios are barely hanging on just 1, let alone have a positive cash-TL number.... so far only small/mid caps can have positive cash - TL numbers right?

Cash rich with low debt companies looks very safe but at the same time, means they might not be utilizing their cash for expanding their business

Actually all boils down to your judgement, some people hate companies who hoard cash

Like Apple lol, the very reason why Olam debt is so huge is because they are expanding very quickly which is also not a good sign since they are highly leverage

Yeah, I'm thinking it differs from sector/industry to sector/industry. Like eg., tech and pharma may find it easier to expand by spending cash to buy up smaller start-ups/increase R&D; whilst commodities biz should focus on increasing yields of their agribiz, instead of like Olam, go around buying companies left and right, not really caring about the huge debt burden.

Will take a look, I have a few value stocks in my head, but almost none have high cash/debt.. their other metrics look very good otherwise. Now is penny stock derby.. everything also burst :s13:.. I have to wait for the calm (or storm) =/

I didn't look at all the STI companies yet, but sembmarine is one that is hoarding huge cash and in net cash position

1 billion in cash if I remember correctly, about 30+ cents per share I think

if you ask me for my opinion lah

im favor the purple downtrend more than the ascending triangle because of this daily chart

but 2.00 is a natural support, can possibly take and run with a few bids

well, i was right, its following the downtrend channel.
