Taking some liberties with this example using a system integrator like Origin PC which had released their own o'ced 5 GHz AMD machine sometime back. Now they don't even need to do any overclocking to get that 5 GHz...
Origin Refreshed AMD Gaming PCs - HotHardware

Rehashed with the FX-9590, may imagine it to look something like this lovely looking custom rig...

Tempting enough for some well heeled consumers to bite? :)

PS: Anyone from Origin PC objecting to it being used in this example, pls just holler out and I will happily take it down.

Undervolting The FX-9590
@ah_khoo, here's some undervolting test results as per your request.

Stock load volts - 1.513V for both 4.7/5GHz.

Ran at stock 4.7GHz UV@1.4375V (without Turbo) and quickly got bored after doing more than 15 mins of P95 Blend.

Next, I re-enabled Turbo@5GHz in the BIOS and did a successful 30+ minute transcoding session with Handbrake from a movie DVD to mp4.

As can be seen from hwinfo screenshot, the CPU Power reporting has re-appeared cos I left the APM option enabled this time around.

5GHz Turbo@1.488V does appear to kick in over a few cores (thin red boxes) but it has to be very transient as can be seen from the average Core speed being rather even across all cores.

So for now, running stock clocks at undervolted ~0.0250-0.0755V with some semblance of stability (30 mins Handbrake). btw, check out the great load DTS temps in both P95 Blend and Handbrake too.

HTH :)

Ya the loaded temp is indeed very low. But the performance is... meh... I guess I'll wait for steam roller ba. Anyway thanks for the review Mac.

DVDFab Undervolted

NB: cancelled the 1st run to enable all 8 core operation cos initially DVDFab had been set at only 4 cores.

Again, great load temps as max DTS did not even breach 50C. :)

Handbrake Undervolted

Think the thermal grease has settled in by now, the hwinfo reported Handbrake max load DTS temps are so crazily close to my Haswell idle DTS temps under the same cooling setup. :D

Posted more to counter those who mindlessly keep repeating after others that AMD processors run very hot... I have yet to see any new Intel ones doing 50C max load DTS temps in our local climate so far.

Today's rainy cool weather - Handbrake with 5 GHz Turbo active at < 50C max load DTS temps

Meanwhile, Intel users can see 5GHz < 50C max load DTS temps only in their sub-ambient cooling dreams. :D

Mac, may i know which cpu cooler r u using? cos ur minimum temp is very suspicious... lol..

our ambient temp average around 28C, how do u managed to get so low?

or maybe the sensor error?

See 1st post again... using Nickel plated Copper Heatkiller 3.0 with a 360 rad

afaik the AMD DTS is calibrated to be accurate only from around 40C onwards, the minimum DTS is a pure waste of time.

accurate at only around 40C is meaningless... what kind of engineering is that man... anyway thanks for letting me know. cheers! :D

And that's actually quite different from what I had posted above. =:p

" accurate only from around 40C onwards" ie. inaccurate below ~40C, more accurate above ~40C

Most DTS on CPUs are calibrated to get more accurate the closer it gets to the throttling temperature (the primary reason for having the DTS ie. prevent thermal damage) and it's not just AMD. Intel CPUs have inaccurate idle DTS readings too and some have even stuck idle DTS as well ie. the DTS does not read below a certain value even if you cool it down further.

All in, the DTS purposes to serve more as a guide to trigger thermal throttling in the CPU and not so much for reading idle temps.
