I'm actually thinking of rooting my phone and have a custom ROM injected.

Any of you have any experience or recommendation, appreciate if you could put in the links here.

i've went thru XDA forum and found various with their own followers hence unsure now.

I''m a noob in this, saw there's custom kernel as well, what's the diff?

it depends on what you need...custom kernel and custom ROMs are always on-going developments, so it won't be as stable as stock, but in return you get performance, battery saving, UI changes, etc., whatever you want. For me I'm OK with stock, so I just root my phone and that is enough.

In other news, a student in Taiwan had his Xperia V washed out to sea and was found 4 days later, in working condition!

what do you get from rooting the phone?

-save space: for e.g. update facebook, they store 2 app files in the phone, as one is pre-loaded and the other is the update file from play store. and note, its the entire app, and not just data files, so for a typical app like facebook, you "lose" about 30MB of space. You can use an app (which requires root) to "combine" the app and save some space.
-batt saving: i can adjust CPU max freq when charging, screen off, in call, etc. to save some batt life.
-backups: can backup everything, including wireless network passwords (not sure if the Google sign-in does that now), and transfer over to a new phone (or old one) if i lost or switch phone. In my case, I'm particular about my widget settings (color, font settings, etc.), and I don't want to lose the settings.
-automation: I can setup my phone to auto turn on and off wireless interface when I am near a particular location (aka geofencing)

there's probably other reasons but these are my own ones.

Telcos stopped bundling this phone with plan a long time ago. The official Sony shops still have it for sale at $498.

Uggh, when did it come back for sale with recontract plans?

I was searching for it about a couple of months back and all the telcos didn't have it then.

Looks like I'll be using my M1 loyalty vouchers to get a phone I don't want to resell.

most people would just top up about 200 more for a xperia z, which essentially/supposedly does everything xperia v does but faster and better (well except for that tricky glass sheet on the back).

Z is too large and I prefer phones where the battery is removable.

same here. but a bit sad that there are not as many 3rd party accessories for it. and it's uber hard to find at handphone shops now...

Other than case and screen protectors, what other accessories are there?

As a previous post further down pointed out, it is now avaliable at SingTelshop online for contract, max price is $48 for 2 years. No option to buy the phone without contract.

It pretty much looks like Sony Mobile Singapore litterally dumped this phone once the Z was gaining interest with the public.

Finding spare parts if it conks out looks to be even more problematic - I think I bought the only spare battery (BA800) in the whole of SG! :s27:

And the funny thing is, the spare battery, though new in the packaging, is older that the one in the phone!

The DK25 charging dock is also out of stock, probably permanently.

I think Sony's batteries for phones are designed to be used over a few years by different models. BA800 was previously used for the Xperia S.

obviously the xperia v was a prototype for the xperia z. the only slight advantage i would consider the xz is the ram and the stamina mode which can be customized.

I think the same battery (BA800) is also used for the Xperia L & M, and a few other phones back during the Sony Ericsson days.
