Hi there. Depreciation for NPV is always an irrelevant cost and NEVER treated as a cash outflow. However, depreciation is tax deductible. We subtract depreciation from the profits to determine the taxable income which then gives us our taxation paid. Taxation paid IS a relevant cash outflow.
To put it simply, we calculate depreciation so that we can calculate the tax paid. Then subtract the tax paid from the pre-depreciation cash flow to get the final figure (assuming you have no further capital expenditure.
