I got my first taste of Singtel's state of support and now I understand why there have been so many complaints. Been with them a long time and was shock this time around.

I work from home and have some important project work to finish and transmit by today. And this is not something I can put on disk and bring physically. Even If I can get a plane ticket, I will not get there in time.

I lost internet connection at about 1:10am. I thought it was the normal maintanance so I waited a while, no change. I rebooted the router, no go. I power cycle ONT and router in proper sequence twice, no go.

So I called 1688. Tried troubleshoot with the staff but cannot get internet back. Earliest support appt is tomorrow, 13-Jan. I can't wait. A while later, I called 1688 again. This time I spent more than 1-1/2 hour on phone. They can see my router, they can see my iPhone and other devices/PCs connected to the router. I did Windows network diagnostic and it said some DNS problem. Chrome also say DNS problem. I tired Google DNS server, no help. We tried everything for more then 1-1/2 hours. I power cycle, he reboot, still no internet. He said he will put up my request for today's tech support appointment, say someone will call me 8:30am.

I made a request to see if it help in the meantime - to recreate my profile. Declined said they cannot do it at their level at that time. Can only do during work hours. OK I understand.

Things I have tried. Connect to routers via wifi and via direct lan cable. Tired 5 computers and 3 handphones. All connected but no internet. On the computers I can see they get proper IP address from router. On router, I can see them connected.

No one called at 8:30am so I called. Said will escalate. Then someone called, same story no apt today, earliest is tomorrow. So in a very pissed state I called billing to ask them to put me to local Singapore support, not those 1688. Spoke to the same guy I spoke to at 8:30am. Same old song all over again - have already escalated, all supervisors are on the line. Which then make me realised I have been put on the 1688 call centre loop. Sh!t!!!

Another request to recreate my profile while we wait also declined. Cannot do at their level. Hey! now is daytime working hour!

My guess is they will play delaying tactics whole of today. Meantime I will miss my deadline. Sure I can try go somewhere with internet, but how to lugged my computers or transfer all my stuff not missing any? My office is at home.

Why dont you use mobile hotspot as back up?

Or plan in advance in case any issue for something that is super very important?

Better have backup plan next time.

Get starhub dual cable + fibre.

I even want to get two laptops/pc at home, in case one suddenly died at night and need something urgent.

If both failed at same time, you have done better than what 99% most people should have done and just blame it on pure 'luck'.

Better be prepared next time bro.

Starhub dual broadband can only help if the issue is due to NLT. If problem is on Starhub's end you will be back to square one.

Maybe can go to your relative's place to use the internet since it is work related and is urgent for you. If this thing don't work at your own place, you need to move to an alternate location while Singtel looks for a solution.

I am getting shock this time. The DNS server (on the ST's issued router) cannot be set or changed by user. It is from ST network and is fixed. Now, this is what I getting... yes right now!

I called 1688 and asked to be transfer to the person I spoke to twice this morning. He said I can ask for him and they will transfer. But no, 1688 straight refused.

103.253.25.209, I did a search on APNIC, it belongs to IndoVirtue (www.indovirtue.com). And 8.8.8.8, hey what is ST doing using Google DNS IP?

Is this why I am getting DNS problem? I asked the 1688 to do something about this because this is from ST. He refused flatly, say apt has alredy been scheduled but can't tell me when.

If it is urgent, I guess you shouldn't wait for technical support. See if you can go to your friends or neighbour house and borrow their internet for a few hours.

This kind of thing is see you heng sway one. Unfortunately you sway sway internet down when you need to transfer large files. Can happen to any ISP.

Most technical support can't come down to customer place to troubleshoot within 24 hours. They got lots of customers and usually the queue is a few days. Unless you go sign up those corporate plans where they got same day on site technical support. But that will cost a lot of money.

Hi TS,

To be fair, this can happen to any ISP and I dont see any diff how Singtel handles your issue will be diff from other ISPs as they have their SOP to follow.

Just can say that you are 'unlucky' that this happened at the wrong time when you need the Internet the most. Maybe, would like to suggest as some bro had mentioned to use your mobile hotspot as temporarily backup to send those important files first. Secondly, if your mobile is also from Singtel, speak to the manager, who is handling your Internet issue, to seek waiver of your excess mobile data if exceed due to your home fibre is down till your home fibre is restored. Speak to them your request nicely and I believe they can work out something for you.

Do update us the outcome and hope your home internet can recover ASAP.

good luck

Something happened to me similarly to you, when the singtel fibre exchange caught fire some time ago. I was unable to complete my school assignment due to the 3 days downtime and I had to use the school's network instead.

Can totally understand your frustration..

But just a kind note of advice, you can't blame the team for not attending to your immediate needs just cos u have a home office. U should go for the business solution instead. They have a much swifter response to your business needs and downtime response. Since u r using consumer plan, then the support will only be at consumer level.

Alternatively, have a redundancy fibre installed. So that u can fail over to the active line should the primary fibre fails.

You should seek to use your neighbour network to transmit the files.

You can change the DNS address in advanced admin menu. Moreover, I have also been using 7003 for so long and it was the default singtel DNS but not Google DNS.

Switch back to Singtel DNS bah.. or call them again, can be done remotely I guess..

I am using 7002. There is no way I can change the DNS IP address in the router, not even in the admin pages. If you have the steps , please enlighten me. So it is not an option of I changing it back in the router. No way can be done.

I have also input ST DNS server 165.21.100.88/162.21.83.88 into my computer with no success still no internet. I have also tried Google 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 on my computer, same no luck.

I just reset the router and it is still getting the same "wrong" DNS from ST.

I called again. Again they refused to do anything, even after agreeing that the DnS IP can only be gotten direct from ST. This is the sad state of support with ST now.

I am a small fry, trying to invent a computer in my garage (err... bedroom). Can only afford a few dollars for the 6502 processor.

I would suggest that you get a better aftermarket router that supports VLAN tagging and that will give you more control. When I was with Singtel I was using Asus RT56U which supports VLAN tagging as required by Singtel it also allows me to use Google public DNS, OpenDNS or UnoTelly premium DNS (paid).

Ask 1688 guy to flash the firmware?

That I think they can do...

1688 refused to do anything except that support appt has been arranged for tomorrow. They claim can't do anything at their end while waiting for tomorrow. No to making my router get the proper stuff from ST (who know what else is wrong). No to recreating my profile. Basically no to every suggestion that may help in the meantime. Their attitude, from what I am getting, is their work is done. They troubleshoot and when that failed they arranged an appt. It seems that is their job scope nothing more.

Some clown implied that since Singtel bought over OpenNet, other ISPs would get screwed and Singtel's speed will be the best. I guess not. :s13:
