Telcos often trumpet their network's VoLTE capabilities but it is not true that all VoLTE devices sold by them are functional in that aspect.

Pity that the layman may not have a way to enable that feature on their device cos of the telcos.

True?

Not all phones with VoLTE is able to activate it or not.

Having 4 mobile lines.
I can turn on the VoLTE and it did show the VoLTE icon on the notification bar on all 4 of my mobile phones, with VoLTE feature.

But in the past, i do have one phone which when i turn on the VoLTE feature, the VoLTE icon is not available.
But now the same SIM mobile line is in another phone which when VoLTE is turn on it is shown as VoLTE icon in the notification bar.

So basically it can be both ways, meaning phones and Telco settings are enable or not.

This could means that the user need to inform Telco on the phone model which is having problem to turn on VoLTE and shown VoLTE icon.

Finally do note that this work in 4G /LTE signal.
As it may not work in 3G signal.

All Apple iPhone from iPhone 6s series onwards support VoLTE.

Android phone depends on telco support, but usually flagships from Samsung, LG, Sony, OPPO and Huawei support VoLTE but it's highly dependent on telco support.

to use VOLTE, the phone's firmware must support the local VOLTE firmware. that being said if a device is supported by local telco, that device needs to run on approved local firmware.

Sometimes it's actually not because of the carriers, it's the manufacturers.

When the manufacturers don't want to implement VoLTE settings on carrier variants, the carriers can't do anything.

Other than phone supporting voLTE,one thing to note is both callers on either side is connected to VOLTE.

So lets say both phones support voLTE. But the caller at (City) calls out with voLTE signal to receiver at let's say (Tuas) without voLTE signal, you won't get the HD digital call effect.

Ive so far only experience only a few times of real VOLTE.

That’s true that both parties must be on VOLTE network in order for the enhanced codec to work. However, if people all tend to downgrade to 3G, then VOLTE don’t really have an effect.

One good thing about it is that you wont lose your 4G while you’re on VOLTE even if your party receiving the call is not on VOLTE..

Thats right. Majority reason is phone firmware, not telco. Telo provide a set of specificationthat required to comply, is up to the phone company to have firmware confirm to it.

How does RMN4 sets get to run VoLTE after tweaking manually without changing firmware if as you posit, while Mate9/10 can't?
It's not the firmware in that case isn't it?

True that your data connection won't die off during voice call while VoLTE is enabled.
That's the important part - not the improved clarity bit.

The configuration for MIUI devices to support local VoLTE was implemented for a few months alr, but Xiaomi chose to disable it in the Singapore variant of the MIUI firmware; you need to choose other locale (eg Thailand/SK) to enable VoLTE.

Even then, I'm not even sure if all the Big Three are supported or not. I only know M1 4G Voice (together with HD Voice when calling another M1 customer on 4G Voice) can be used, not sure about the other 2 carriers.

But I can confirm that StarHub 3G HD Voice (not 4G HD Voice+) is working, MIUI shows the HD logo when making voice calls to another StarHub customer.

How to tell if iPhone is using VoLTE? Android will show logo but iPhone won't?

iOS doesn't show VoLTE and HD Call logo.

To show that you're on VoLTE call on normal voice call, your network will remain on the Telco 4G/LTE network.

For CSFB/SRVCC, you'll be back on the 3G/WCDMA (HSDPA/HSPA/HSPA+) or even 2G/GSM network if the telco have service for that.

If the carrier is VoLTE only (eg TPG), without the compatible handset will not get any normal voice calls working.

I'm sorry but I don't think HD Call is visible anywhere.

To add, for singtel, even if your phone supports VoLTE, u need to get singtel to include the “4G Clear Voice” in your profile. You can go to your singtel app > Manage your add-ons > to see if you have the “4G clear voice add on activated. If not, just call the hotline and request for it to be added. It’s FOC

What about Starhub?

Do they need to add or enable 4G HD Voice into our profile or account?

I don't see any VAS mentioning VoLTE, HD Voice that can be added in Starhub account system.
