I am exploring the use of Android TV box other than entertainment usage, mainly to run Linux.
So far I have good lucks with Amlogic S905W based X96 Mini 2GB/16GB, other S905X, S905W based box should work as well, like Tanix TX3 Mini, Tanix TX3 Max, etc, either legacy kernel or main line kernel work for me.
Armbian Linux is a good distribution, Android TV fork is in their forum.

I have also good luck with Amlogic S912 based box H96 Pro + 3GB/33GB with the legacy kernel.
So far I have no luck with Rockchip RK3328 based box H96 Max+ 4GB/64GB.
Reason to use Android TV Box is that it is cheaper and easy to us and Low cost in terms of larger memory and emmc support out of the box. You do lose the GPIOs but my GPIO usage is covered by my USB stuff and I have Arduino and STM32 MCU demo boards as well.
Major problem is which DTB to use.
I do have Raspberry Pi 3B+ boards and Orange Pi boards and Rock64 boards as well.
