Have been to those 'meta' places in Osaka/Tokyo during my 2 weeks stay around 3 years ago. Decided to go back again by making use of the ANA Hello Blue Sale.

This time round, my wife and I wish to visit some quieter, scenery etc locations (with good food :s13:).

This is our rough route: Narita(arrival) -->Hakone-->Takayama-->Nagoya(departure)

May we ask if the about route is suitable/recommended for a 10 days trip? I would like to finalize the route first before we start planning on the nitty-gritty portion of the itinerary.

Thanks!

For 10 days it's fine with those places but how many days each? Hakone i guess at most you will do a 2D1N unless u are going to visit the 5 lakes.

Have to see the breakdown of places in different cities which you are keen to visit.

Hi, thanks for reply. We don't intend to cover all 5 lakes, but we would like to at least visit Lake Kawaguchiko. Is 2D1N enough?

Day 1 - Explore Hakone then stay one night
Day 2 - Pack up and go lake kawaguchiko before heading over to next destination

The problem would be your luggage unless you use baggage forwarding.

You need to break it down to where you want to go and have a basic plan. Nobody here knows what you like and wanted to do with just these information.

Search through the forums as there should already be some itineraries here, there's a sticky thread that has all different plans.

Sorry for not mentioning on all these. I plan to travel in Nov this year, the flight price is about 500+ to 600+

That's a good price! As you will be departing from Nagoya, perhaps a suggestion can be as follows

Tokyo -> Hakone -> Kawaguchiko -> Matsumoto (for its castle/history buffs) -> Takayama -> Shirakawago (nearby) -> Nagoya

As you will not be returning to Tokyo after Hakone, I think you dont need the Fuji Hakone pass.

for such a itin, is it feasible to self drive, or better to use public transport ?

Looking for the best way to spend 10 days in Japan? You're in the right place! ...
Days 1-3: Tokyo.
Day 4: day trip from Tokyo.
Days 5-6: Kyoto.
Day 7: Nara and Osaka.
Day 8: Miyajima and Hiroshima.
Day 9: morning in Kyoto → Tokyo.
Day 10: Tokyo in morning/afternoon → airport.

Public transport is still ok but if budget allows, I'd rather drive and enjoy the scenery. Can stop at random, interesting places and explore.

This is a comprehensive plan if it's your first time in Japan and want to see as much as possible. But if you are travelling with family, it's not really recommended as there is a lot of time wasted traveling around. For example, assuming you are going to be based in Kyoto from Day 5 onwards and traveling by the fastest Shinkansen (Nozomi):

(Day 5) Tokyo → Kyoto (130+ mins)
(Day 8) Kyoto → Hiroshima (100 mins)
(Day 8) Hiroshima → Kyoto (100 mins back)
(Day 9) Kyoto → Tokyo (130+ mins again)
(Day 10)Tokyo → Narita (45 mins)

I think it might be better to try to find if there are open-jawed tickets to cut down on traveling time, ie:Fly in Tokyo, fly out either Osaka or Nagoya (or even Hiroshima).

That itinerary very touch-and-go. If u are looking for something like tt, u will probably be better off with packaged tour

For 10 days, I will suggest sticking to 1 region, at most 2.

Yeah, I agree. 10 days is not that long. If 14 days or longer, you can.

Agree with just 2 regions for 10 days. I did only Tokyo and Fuji 5 lakes for 11 days recently. Fuji is known to be elusive, might be good to buffer more days for it if you can.
Maybe just add 1 more place if u find 2-place itinerary too boring? Saitama, or kamakura?

Good points here - don’t need to tire yourself.
