I am not sure having a higher resolution counts as future proof to be honest. Based on my personal opinion, a high resolution panel on laptop may be more of a liability than of any use.

1) Higher resolution = to very small fonts and icons without scaling (especially so on a laptop). Windows cannot handle scaling well and you will notice some applications/ windows with fuzzy image.

2) You need to have a very fast GPU to drive that resolution in most games. Since the GTX 980M is pretty much a GTX 970 on desktop, you can use that as a gauge to see if it can drive the games that you want at native resolution. I believe there are some newer titles that its starting to fall behind and can run smoothly at 1080p.

Of course the pros with a higher resolution = higher the pixel density and sharper image, particularly when you are talking about a 15 inch or smaller panel.

thanks for ur reply bro!

just wondering if im sacrificing gaming image quality by buying a 1080p screen now, esp since 1440p and 4k res is more common nowadays and it is quite a noticeable difference when gaming (or so i've heard).

also, i usually buy 17 inch laptops so the scaling issues may not be so noticeable.

and since next gen nvidia gpu is coming out soon, wondering if i'm short-changing myself by getting a 1080p screen laptop with GTX 980M now. unless i wait a while more until the GTX 1080 is released and i buy a 980M laptop in few months time.

I've used an Aftershock 17 inch laptop with a panel resolution of 1080p. To be honest, I feel the image is already quite sharp even when I compare it to the 25 inch monitor with 1440p resolution. Perhaps it will be a good idea for you to go and see for yourself, the difference between 1080p and 1440p before deciding which one you want to go for.
Gaming at 1440p is definitely better looking than on 1080p, but the question is whether the GPU can keep up with settings. Some less demanding games should run fine, but recently released titles are starting to put a strain even on the higher end mobile GPU. I foresee that you may end up having to lower the image settings in game to keep it running at 1440p. Next generation mobile GPU may alleviate this problem if you can wait till the second half of the year. ;)

I recommend you test it out first before making that decision. It is fine for me, but may not be for you. But long story short, you will be paying a premium for the 1440p, and typically it will do you little good on a laptop. :)
