Whatever laptop size you intend to buy, remember to consider its weight + the charger's weight. You might think you'll be alright after lifting it at the store but you have to try and foresee how it feels like carrying it around and chasing around for classes.

Just my opinion. I used to carry an Alienware to uni 5 years ago - left it for home use after 2 or 3 days.

Why do you even need such a huge screen laptop? Play game or to aid your study?

Trust me, buy a lightweight laptop. If not you will hate your laptop after few weeks. If you wanna game, buy a desktop instead.

p.s : What course you are going?

Thanks for the replies, this was just to help me gauge what I should be getting for poly, if something with such a big screen would be an inconvenience.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good laptop for poly(I feel that 13 inches is a bit small, so maybe a 15 inch one? Or is that still too big? ).
Budget around 1000 SGD since I want a desktop at home for games.

as an ex poly student and current uni student, i suggest u get 13" to 14".(i used to carry a 2kg laptop and it sucks, now in uni suay suay a fren gave me his macbook pro also at 2kg.) in fact u shld consider the macbook, its less than 1kg. super easy to carry to school. unless u are in design sch, u won't need a super laptop. just get a light, small and yet capable laptop (don't ever get those netbooks). u will be mainly doing power points and word documents with ur laptop.

edit: perhaps u can consider the xiaomi notebooks, but do note that 99% it will come with chinese windows, u need to purchase a new english version. BUT since u are going to poly, u can always get a windows from ur sch. (even as a poly alumni i still can get:s13::s13:)

anyway i still think u should wait for maybe check out the poly u going to apply and check their laptop seller :

here is a link of a random poly i just grab : http://www.np.edu.sg/notebook/models/Pages/models.aspx

cos at least u get better support and 3 years of warranty.

else u can consider asus X303/X305 (was doing a small research on these model for my brother) but budget might be abit high if u are fine. comes with 1 or 2 years warranty depends on which model.

Thanks, I guess I will wait until then to choose a laptop. Probably will be best to get from the poly.

that is just what u think, worst case scenario is u install windows on ur mac (which can be done easily). typically only design students have to use mac or certain engineering courses need windows because of the software. otherwise mac or windows is usable for most courses. i did an IT network related course, both mac and windows can be used. in ur case, if u do BMS, from what i know from my friend (who did BMS) only used MS office :s13::s13:
and btw ur poly should have MS office, so don't buy that first (at least for me i got mine thru the sch for free)

and yeah like what zero chaos said, get from the poly itself is quite good, some of the deals they have is not bad and the warranty is longer. but if u want to go for super portability, go for the xiaomi notebook or macbook bah

Wow... MS office...sounds intense...
Honestly, I thought they would do more than just MS office

Can consider LG gram 15, affordable, and the lightest 15 inch laptop in the world.

But only suitable if you aren't doing a lot of serious work such as cad, cam, 3d visualization, etc.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think $1500 base model is affordable though.

1K budget is too low for a decent laptop. Based on this year poly laptop model, I think the best laptop is Lenovo YOGA 700 as it is lightweight (1.6kg) and you can play some games with it too (940m) .

As a rule of a thumb, find a laptop that is lightweight and good battery life and buy in the poly as it provides 3 years warranty instead of 1 year.

p.s: Oh ya, get a ssd to prevent data loss from drop (touchwood) and great bootup time.

I'm going to poly next year and I was wondering if anyone has experience with a 17 inch laptop in poly and will in to share your experience?
Is it advisable to get a 17 inch laptop for Poly?
Currently considering the aftershock S-17.

Don't get a 17 inch laptop. It is too big to carry around. You can't set it up discreetly in the lecture theatre or tutorial rooms.

Poly should have some offers so don't rush to get a laptop or software.
