Finally after 7 years, decided my current XP DIY PC needs a replacement. Everything is working ok except that more programs (Dropbox, video playback on Firefox etc) are not being supported on Windows XP. So maybe its time to take the plunge into Windows 10 and would be more cost effective to get a new pc then pay just for the Win 10 licence.

Current system nothing great but things to note:
1) 2x 1TB SATA + 1 3TB External HDDs will be reused for the new system
2) 1GBps SH Fibre Connection on wired LAN
3) Philips 23" LCD HDMI Monitor

PC mostly used for surfing and backup of photos etc. All my past pcs have been DIY but now totally out of the scene and don't have the time to scout around for components. So think would be easier to just get a pre-built brandname pc with genuine Windows 10 Home installed. Would love to get an SSD HDD with the new system too but basic brandname pcs don't offer unless maybe u take a gaming rig which is a bit wasted for my purposes. I remember last time shops at SLS had bundled packages including assembly. Still torn between the brandname vs DIY route haha.

How about ASUS? Thought of taking a look at Funan Challenger closing sale. Or can someone recommend any stable bundle at SLS that i can just grab? Would appreciate any advice and recommendations from bros..

Add: Any online diy options from a reliable local retailer? A sort of McDonald's style ordering system where you can choose a basic package, swap and customise to your liking and they'll assemble, install and deliver to u? Or other online options?

how to install your SATA HDD? as you know, once case open, your warranty void..

the best thing is DIY route.. you can install SSD as many you want..

you have the experience, just need to update yourself a little bit more..

Once you go DIY there's no turning back. For what you want to do, cna be done with $600-700 at most, I guess

That's a great point actually but I'm not interested in the warranty.

Anyway i might just decide to diy. As mentioned need to read up myself and should be easier to find info nowadays. Not in a rush and its more fun anyway. And at least I'll know what's under the hood. Thanks guys.

Save the money. Scout for parts in sls. You can redo a pc with just $500 worth with an ssd.

Dont see why you need to spend on getting a branded oem pc.

Having not in the scene for 7 years is no difference till date. If you can fix your own pc since back then. I dont see why cant you now. Not having time to scout for parts just 1 day of your time isnt an excuse either. Cause you can actually ask pc themes to do the assembly for you and collect within the day itself.

Thanks for the recommendation. Although my needs are not that demanding, i would like to "future-proof" my setup by getting above average components so that the system can last another 5-10 years. After all my current XP system is running great except being let down by the OS which is a 1st for me as all my previous upgrades were due to hardware and never due to software. I would like my new setup to be snappy to Windows 10 but previous experience with M$ has shown that every iteration of Windows is so much more resource-hungry than before. Anyway, after some looking around, i'm thinking of sticking to the list except to change to:

CPU+MB: Intel Core i5-4690 + ASUS Trooper B85 @ $445 (PC Themes)
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM DDR3L-1600 CL11 16GB @ $90

1) Please comment on the above mix of components
2) Is a 250 GB SSD sufficient for Win 10 and other programs?
3) Isn't it better to do a clean install of Win 10 rather than upgrade from Win 8? Only consideration is price right?

1) an I5 and an I3 will not have a difference in your usage so its better to get the cheaper one. In fact a pentium is already sufficient. For ram, no need until 16gb for surfing net, unless you open 30++ tabs at once using chrome.

2) 250gb is enough for win10 and a few office plus adobe programs. My 250gb ssd contains office, all the adobe full set, cs:GO and GTA V still have some space left.

3) Will be slightly cheaper to get a win 8 then upgrade from there. Makes no difference actually

True but my current Asus MB has lasted 7 years without trouble. That's why hoping the new Asus TUF Series can last a long time. But with all things nowadays not being built to last, have to wait and see. Some would say that its better save your money and upgrade every 3-5 years..

1) Core i3 is more than enough for such usages. Can always buy Core i5/i7 on the (dirt) cheap in the far future if full physical quad core is necessary. No need to rush to get 16GB of RAm at one shot. Just get 1 stick of 8GB try first then do your assessment and see whether really need another 8GB.

2) Even 120GB is enough if you are just going to install essential programs like Office, Antivirus, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, etc... and none of the editing software like Photoshop, and any AAA games.

3) Cost the least to get to Windows 10 at just USD20, compared to buying Windows 10 directly at USD45. More tedious such that you need to first update to Windows 8.1 (for free via Windows Store) then register for Windows 10 free upgrade (valid till July) and do an in-place upgrade.

Fortunately, you can simply reinstall Windows 10 directly, after the first installation, in the future if you ever need to reformat the PC.

Well tbh I wouldn't said that future proofing is a good key terms though since mamy components ain't build to last long than its paper data, like my AMD board, keep RMA when it reach its going 3rd year. Now seems OK, but still will hang once in a while. And beside that future proofing also means it can support newer devices like m.2 or sata express, type C USB, etc.

Any alternatives to the Corsair Carbide 100R case? Don't like the vents being on top. Looking for something quiet and not so dusty. Airflow average should be ok as i don't plan on getting a gpu for now so will just be more for the processor..
