Have 10GbE sfp intending to 10Gbe ur hse or slowly move to fibre whole LAN?

No need to use Fibre anytime soon, even if you are using 10G for Internet and home network.

I am even prepared to use Wireless (WiFi 6 and maybe WiFi 7 later) and no Ethernet for major devices (Two Acer Windows 11 laptops and Mac Mini M1, 2 iPads, 5 mobile phones) for the next three years. No plan to wired up the home either.

No plan to go with 10Gbps plan in 2024/2025/2026.

Only the devices around the ONT are using 1G/2.5G Ethernet.

I am still using Singtel 1Gbps plan but may upgrade to a decent true 2.5Gbps plan in the future if there is such a plan in the future (not using CGNAT, using ONT and not ONR).

Current 2.5G capable devices:
1) Intel N100 mini PCs with quad Intel I226-V 2.5G NICs, 16GB/512GB
2) Intel N100 mini PCs with dual Intel I226-V 2.5G NICs, 16GB/512GB
3) TP-Link unmanaged 2.5G switch --> may get 2.5G managed switch later
4) Asus RT-AX86U (single 2.5G port)
5) ZTE BE7200 Pro+ (dual 2.5G ports), China version WiFi 7, no 6GHz band

Anyway, I just placed an order for one Ugreen Type C to 2.5Gbps adapter and one Ugreen USB 3 to 2.5Gbps adapter through Taobao. They will probably arrive in 3 weeks through 3rd party sea shipping.
Actually this 2.5G adaptor is easily available in singapore and can immediately get it from Gain City or Challenger and no need to wait la. It is off the shelve la.

You are replying to an old post in July 2020?

You can get Ugreen 2.5G adapters from offical Ugreen Shopee/Lazada store as well. The square version is at S$26.16 (promotion). The round version is at S$43.91.

The Belkin version you mention is insanley expensive at S$79. The D-Link one is also not cheap at S$59.

After running the FOC router to POE my APs 2.5G port, finally decided to just get a cheap Tplink managed switch during taobao CNY sale.

Quite an affordable consideration for someone looking for a managed switch which comes with 2.5G POE, 10G SPF+ uplink and does simple VLANs.

Good competition will only bring the price down and benefit the consumer. Another low cost switch from hasvio. This time round with 10GBase-T + SFP+, POE and a GUI for management! Maybe I should also be getting one to power up the rooms!

Ordered 2 of these managed switches, 1 with POE and 1 without for under 120 sgd. Curious to see how long they will last and how reliable they are. Not expensive to play around compared to a year ago where these were closer too 500 each.

i've been using it for about 4 months now and i've been pretty happy. speeds have remained consistent.

will likely get their 10gbe RJ45 offerings to power the infra at my new home later this year.

Why not go with SFP+? uses less power and not as hot along with fibre or DAC. About a year ago I transitioned to SFP+ instead and saw quite significant power savings and do not need an active fan to cool the switch.

Also a consideration! :)

my devices are not directly connected to my NAS
they are all connected back at db box from wall ports

what will be a good way to setup the 2.5Gbps/10Gbps home network?
main router + switch inside db box?
There is a difference between LAN (home network) and WAN (Internet) here.

You can use 500Mbps internet yet have 10Gbps or 2.5Gbps home network, to have faster communication between desktops, laptops and NAS.

For example if you take high resolution 4k videos on the phone, then edit on the desktop/laptop and then archive in the home NAS, then the WAN speed does not matter but LAN speed matters.

Then when you want to upload to YouTube, WAN speed starts to matter.

thanks! any recommendations for switch?

If you need to use PoE devices than choose a switch with PoE ports

If you have an extensive network or a 2-tier network to operate then use managed switch(es)

If network is simpe then use unmanaged switch(es) will do

How many devices will be using the switch(es)?

Decide which or combo of the above then choose the brand/model you want for your 1Gbps or 10Gbps network
