Good day.

Seeking some advice. This will be our 2nd trip to Tokyo after 10+ years but first for the kids (8&10).

My plan is to spend half in Tokyo and later half self drive up to Shirakawa -> Kanazawa -> so on and return back to Tokyo

We are not likely to go to Disneyland and USJ (too far) but i have plan to visit the less popular amusement park like Fuji Q and Yomiuriland . Other places must go will be Hakone (can do via Klook), safari park near Mt Fuji and trying the boujee train.
Rest of the days will be F&E, still in planning.

I will prefer to stay in 1 hotel throughout. Will Shinjuku be a good place to stay if we are not driving? Previously we had stayed at Hotel Sunroute Shinjuku as there is a airport bus that stop there. I remember it was walkable distance to JR station. We usually start our day early and end by evening. Will like a place where we can also access to good food and bring back to hotel to eat.

Shinjuku is definitely a good base, a very very busy area, will have lots of choices for food and shopping.

I am also going to stay there for my next trip and will be traveling from there to Mt Fuji and back.

My last Tokyo trip also more than 10 years, stayed at Shinagawa area then, more quiet.

I find Sunroute rooms too small for 4pax... I recommend Hotel Century Southern Tower just across the street... they got more room choices and bigger rooms as compared to Sunroute... but slightly more pricey...

And it is just a stone throw away from Takashimaya... if come back late can drop by their supermarket for some last min deals on sashimi, bentos and other snacks on the basement...

Plus if u get high enough lvls and facing rooms... can see Mt Fuji on a good clear day...

But if it is your kids first time in Japan... i would say dun miss Disneyland/Disneysea... unless your kids not into theme parks...

Do you mean you are doing day trips from Shinjuku?

The drive from Shinjuku to Kanazawa is 6 hours one way. Return is 12 hours. So you are going to drive from Shinjuku to Shirakawa to Kanazawa then back to Shinjuku?

abandoned the idea of going fuji Q and switch to disneysea
they will love it :)

just spend your first half at disneysea
follow by tokyo trip(or ghilbli tour the other exhibtion not the one @ mitaka)
just commute by train/bus unless you going places like hokkaido which is not very transport friendly

I would skip the rental car if you plan to only make day trips from Tokyo Metropolis. Trains and buses are very convenient, and based on your kids age it should not be a problem.

I also suggest that you put Disney Sea in the plans (maybe can skip Disney Land). The Tokyo one is really nice and I'm sure your kids will love it.
