is it a must to have JR passes to travel around in japan??

newbie here totally have no idea what different a JR pass cant we just buy like a single trip ticket or something?

Well it's the savings. If your 7 day trip (eg) takes you from tokyo to Osaka and back, then you are more or less break even on the price of the pass. So if you intend to take further trips in between the 7 days on JR then you save. The disadvantage of a pass vs a single trip ticket is that you cannot take the fastest trains on most Shinkansen lines (eg nozomi).

for your reference :
A single trip from osaka to hiroshima on the sakura trains costs 10200 yen or S$118.
A 7 day JR pass costs about S$330. JR passes can only be bought outside japan and meant for tourists. Definitely worth it if you are travelling from Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Hiroshima and back.

The Peace Memorial Park and the museum, for me, is a must-go. You can spend a few hours in solemn contemplation looking at the pictures of devastation caused by the atomic bomb.

but sian...

Construction Notice: The Peace Memorial Museum is currently undergoing major renovations, during which only one of the museum's two buildings will be open to visitors and the number of exhibits will be reduced. The renovations will be in two stages: from September 2014 to spring 2016 the east building will be closed, followed by the closure of the main building until spring 2018.

does it really matter ah? i'm thinking if i should still go next year.

not necessary, it depends where u are going and if there are any savings using JR pass instead of buying single trip tickets.
JR pass is useful if u are taking expensive shinkansen rides across regions and prefectures such as from Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto and back. use hyperdia to find out how much ur transport going to cost if getting single trip ticket, then see there are any savings if getting the JR pass

base on ur other thread, u are only visiting Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe. if u are flying into Kansai airport, then u wun need the JR pass coz these places are very near to each other and travelling cost is low. e.g. 560yen to get from Osaka to Kyoto. will not be worth it to get the JR pass for 29110yen.

If you have the JR pass and you are in Osaka (takes about 1.5 hr) and you have not been there before, then you should go.

Imagine standing in a place where more than 80000 people died due to the burns and falling debris from buildings. Radiation deaths account for only 15% from what i read. Though in the museum is a pic of a shadow of a person who got vaporised, I recall. And despite all these the people were still able to rebuild their city in a few years; the Peace Museum in 1955. Stand and look at the old the town hall, still there after all these years. Amazing story of resilience. :)

Peace Memorial Park (Hiroshima Travel: Peace Memorial Park), Hiroshima Castle (Hiroshima Travel: Hiroshima Castle), side trip to Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine (Miyajima Travel Guide)

Hiroshima is also famous for their Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. There's a building with many okonomiyaki stalls in the city area call Okonomi-mura.
????

Also, if you go to Hiroshima Castle on sunday, you might be able to catch a performance by people dressed as historical Japanese warriors.

Yes go to Hiroshima if you've not been before.

But if you have time, I felt that the Nagasaki peace park and museum experience was better. I also enjoyed getting away from the crowded cities.

Went to hiroshima bomb museum very educational but at the same time depressing. Should go there if you have time.

With Jr pass, u can make reservations anytime as long as within ur pass valid travel period and got seats left. I reserved 3days worth of tickets in advance especially those special trains in Kyushu
