Hi!!!!!

Last semester I have Academic Warning already. I passed all modules with D
What will happen if I got another Academic Warning this semester also? From NTU website I saw that if consecutive two semester. I will get Academic Probation. Can anyone explain what is Academic Probation? What should I do?
I am still first year student and this is my Year 1 Semester 2. Now waiting for exam results to come out.

Hello

What course are you in? I am B.Eng (EEE) course full time, I was from Singapore Polytechnic EEE.

I will share with you two of my friends' experience, both of them had experienced the "whole process" first hand and they are willing to share their experiences with me.

Very happy to say that I will be officially graduating with the two of them this coming July. Yes, this means there is a way out of this, if you are willing to do it.

This reply is to the best of my knowledge, it is not an official intepretation or representation of the school's policy. Treat it as "advise from the street"

The flow is like this:

Academic Warning (CGPA<2.0 first time) --> Academic Probation (CGPA<2.0 again for 2nd time in a row) --> Academic Termination (CGPA<2.0 again for the 3rd time in a row).

  • Notice the word here is "Consecutively/In a row".

  • Guideline is that if your CGPA is <2.0 for 3 times, you will be terminated.

  • Game is to break the process by pulling your CGPA up to 2.0 (or more) during any of the stages.

  • Once the process is broken, it will restart from Academic Warning if CGPA<2.0 again.

  • To graduate and get the certificate, your CGPA must >=2.0.
  • During Academic Warning/Academic Probation, may not be able to use the online STARS to bid for your timetable, have to do it manually.

I do not know what is the school's definition of academic probation, from what i see, many of my friends who are under academic probation continue as per normal and try to pull their CGPA above 2.0

In any event, when your CGPA falls far below 2.0, must literally work hard smartly.

Academic Termination

Again, take this section as "street advise", like a "rumour".

To the best of my knowledge, and from what i gathered from my friends who unluckily experienced this stage first hand, this may not be the end of your degree.

It seems that you will still be able to continue to study as it seems like there is still a chance for you to appeal, and a letter of appeal is necessary.

It also seems like you need to show your determination (to the school) to continue studying despite the unfavourable academic results.

Of course, the outcome is still determined by the school.

I have not seen people write about this section online, definitely try not to reach this stage.

From my friend's experience, they told me "This is a damn risky bet".
My friends appealed against academic termination twice, and they will be graduating this July. Now i know why they say "damn risky".

Academic Warning --> Study like dog ---> Academic Probation --> Study like dog ---> Gotten Academic Termination (Appealed) --> Study like dog ---> Still gotten Academic Termination (Appealed) --> Study like dog --> Graduate

Expert Tips

What course are you studying? Hard to advise, different course could have different tips.

I once asked a dean's list student, she look at me very seriously and say "You are a student, don't you know it is your responsibility to be discipline and study for the modules you are taking?"

I don't have much tips, but i can share some:

  • Concept is very important.
Lecture teach you a hot pan can be used to fry an egg.
Tutorial ask you how to use the hot pan and oil to make scrambled eg.
Final exam ask you how hot must you heat the oil such that the steak can be cooked to medium rare.

Thus, by practising past year papers, you learn how to whisk an egg; use which tool (methods/formula) can whisk an egg in twice the speed?; can you whisk the egg if the question ask for sunny side up?; how hot to heat the pan for scrambled egg vs deep fried egg;how to control the fire.

- Study(watch lecture, do tutorial first time) alone, but discuss(redo tutorial question, clear doubts, pyp) in groups

I prefer to learn the concept and stuff myself from the lecture, and i prefer to do the tutorial myself for the first time. I want to understand it to the best of my ability first

After which, i will discuss with my friends, and see if there are other approaches or short cuts

I realise the professors wants us to go through the whole process ourselves, and then let us find out the gist and technique ourself. Different approach but similar (but appropriate) concepts.

.

Very good advice. Since I have graduated this year, I shall give some tips. Take it with a pinch of salt.

1) Don't bother about the bell curve. Yes, bell curves from certain schools are pretty insane (think NBS, EEE). But what I have learnt that you can't control the performances of others. The only variable you can control is yourself.

2) Find the best studying methods for yourself. We have studied since primary school, and surprisingly many people I know still cannot find their optimal methods of studying. For me, usually I study alone. Cannot concentrate when other people are around.

Some people read their notes before lectures. I found it waste of time because 90% of the time I don't understand what the heck the content is talking about.

3) Find a group of people (can be small can be large) within the course that can tkss together. Helps to relieve stress as well as clarifying doubts with one another.

That said, best friends may not be the best teammates. If you choose to group with your BFs and know that they are leeches, be prepared to work doubly hard.

4) University is not about studying. Cliche it may sounds, university is a place where you develop as an individual, make career plans and plan your studies towards your plan.#

All the best for your remaining semesters!:s12:

Thk for the advice! Hope next semester can get out of the academic warning. Is EEE high rates get into academic warning/probation?

GPA Requirements

Maybe you can use this http://zueet.com/tools/ntu-gpa-goals-calculator/ to calculate your GPA requirements.

Of course higher GPA is better, but you get to see whats the minimum Sem GPA you need to work towards during the next semester, so your CGPA will go above the GPA 2 zone.

Academic

Did you start from Year 1 or did you admit directly into Year 2?
Which Year/Sem are you in now?
What modules are you taking next semester?

I have some soft copies of examination guides for EEE (many years ago), Private message me your email, i can send them to you at no charge.

If im not wrong, nowadays you all are using "LAMS" platform right?
I think my batch may be the last batch without LAMS platform.
I feel physical lecture is better. Go for the "live" lecture, and watch recorded again.

Not sure what is the academic warning rate/drop out rate.
From words of mouth there seems to be quite a bit, but i do not have the real statistics.

I watch some india IIT lecture videos from here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/nptelhrd/playlists

Some explain better than our professor because they do not use "power point slides", they write out the equations on chalkboard. So u know what happens from one step to another. You will also roughly know whether you don't know the "mathematical manipulation" or the concept

Socially in EEE

Not sure about other courses in NTU, networking is very important.

Try to know majority of the people in your course like your tutors and professors; more importantly, make sure they know you exist: - make small talks, share some tutorial solutions, share assignment solutions, ask past year paper questions, tutorial questions.

Know the girls, as EEE got a lot of guys, there are chances that some guys will send solutions/tips to the girls. Some guys will voluntarily teach these girls as well.

Know the smart foreigners/China girls. Last time a china girl helped me with engineering maths 2, share solutions and assignment solutions. Else i also will fail.

Thus by having good r/s with the girls, she might just share these information with you.

So by making social circle wide, you have a lot of contacts whom you can turn to for help.
Remember to share things with them also. If you really have nothing to share, act pitiful.

Also make good friends with the administrative staff of the school, sometimes you may need their help such as timetable clashes/error/etc

Socially outside EEE

Know the cleaners, sometimes you forget to take something they will keep for you.

One of the cleaners from SPMS died of heart attack last year which is quite sad, we know each other.

Know people from other schools, so you can study at their place during exam period. During heavy rain, or haze, B3 may not be that conducive, try to find some other study area. Maybe friend's hall?(social circle big important)

Social + Academic

Once you have enough contacts, use them to help one another.

For example, if you prefer attending your friend's tutorial class, ask him to let you know the time slot, or maybe acquire the solutions.
This is useful, especially if the quiz is on wednesday, but your tutorial class is on friday, and you cannot attend monday's tutorial slot.

Sometimes I record the tutorials so i can rewatch or share with friends, but i believe it is not allowed to record.

For me, we managed to pull together a group of about 20 ~30 full time students and share resources. These 20+ ~ 30 students have their own friends as well. Thus there are quite a lot of resources.

We also attend part time classes and make friends with part time students, from there you can find opportunities for internships/jobs/business.

During exam periods, 20~30 of us study and revise tgt with the part time students and help one another. Share tips also, everyone's goal is to get the degree or earn money.

With 20-30 people need to find a place to study, thus must make friends with ppl outside EEE, go somewhere else in school study, maybe hive?

With a big group, lesser chance of being "bullied".
