Hi all,

Looking to build a new desktop, but not sure if its worthwhile to reuse some of the parts from my old com.

I am planning to reuse if possible:
1. RAM DDR3 PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
2. Samsung hard disk SATA2
3. DVD drive

Any suggestions for the components like motherboard, processor, power supply, casing etc? Mainly for office use, watching of videos and internet surfing. Budget around $600.

Thank you!

Haswell still uses DDR3 and Skylake can use DDR3L.

Are the below components ok?

- Asus H81M
- CPU 4170 - Not sure if G3258/G3260 may be more value for $.
- DDR3 ram (reuse) - Is there big difference between DDR3 & DDR4?
- SATA2 HD (reuse)
- DVD drive (reuse)

The mb+cpu combo is selling about $230 at tradepac. Any reliable power supply to recommend? My old set-up keeps hanging, which I suspect is due to power supply. Maybe I should also run HD diagnostics to make sure the HD is healthy.

Should be ok for casual use for next 5 years?

If you are buying new, I would suggest going for Coffee Lake and DDR4.

If you want to save money on the RAM, then you might want to consider used CPU+MB instead.

my 10yo nec powermate went into auto shutdown - restart loop last wk... tot no hope liao, can't bear to bury it though... so stripped out all parts n do thorough "washing", removed useless optical drives, replaced thermal paste on processor...

now it's back to working condition n even quieter... temps of duo2core processor oso drop

I changed the CPU fan once also. Had a hard time finding the spare part in Sim Lim. Not easy cause its AMD Athlon. Now I not sure whats wrong.
