Hi folks, need some advice with a networking headache.

Just purchased a resale DBSS unit (TOP'ed in 2012) which has the FTP in the living room next to an SCV point instead of being in the DB cabinet. The fibre connection was probably done just after/around TOP hence its location; there are also no data points installed.

Previous owner on fibre used powerline networking as WIFI could not reach the master bedroom from living room.

Minimal electrical wiring is being done and I'm trying to avoid relocating the FTP given its distance from the DB cabinet. The "DB cabinet" is also an enclosure within the wall structure so placing a wireless router here will not cover the whole unit.

Parents want WIFI in the master bedroom and living room so I'm thinking of using two routers (1 as set as router the other as AP) and some modification to exisiting telphone wiring.

Assuming (1) the junction box for the telephone points is in the DB cabinet, and (2) wiring is at least CAT 5, would the following work?

TIA!!

Modification
1. Change telephone points to RJ45 data points
2. Install patch panel in DB Cabinet
3. Install networking switch in DB Cabinet
4. Connect data points in DB Cabinet to networking switch

Connections
LIVING ROOM: Modem / ONT --> Wireless Router -->T1

DB: Networking Switch --> T1 to T6 on patch panel

Bedroom 2 or MBR: T3 / T5 --> Wireless AP

For your this layout, which is similar to a friend of mine.
He just put the router at the DB area, and the entire house can receive the wifi signal.
Just put it high up.

Of course your original idea is also good, as a whole house is fully wired up.

First of all, have you confirmed that the tel points are indeed using Cat5 cables ?

2nd, they need to be Cat5 "e" and above to support beyond 100 Mbps.

Cat.5(up to 100m) can do gigabit ethernet just fine. The cables they use for the phone points should be at least cat.5e anyway.

Your original idea should be ok.

You can add extra APs as and when it's needed, no need to worry too much.
