Do you remember American Express’s iconic personal green charge card that was first launched in Singapore in 1977? Well, it is making a come back here in Singapore on 30 November 2015 as part of the payment brand’s 90th anniversary here.

To add to the celebrations, American Express is offering the first 1,000 approved principal cardmembers a limited edition Gold American Express Gift Cheque with a face value of US$25 as a nostalgic souvenir when Travelers Cheques were one of the most secured means of payment for travellers.

The American Express Personal Card is a charge card which requires you to pay in full when you receive your statements. The card comes with benefits of up to five Membership Reward points for every S$1.60 spent at merchants such as Starbucks, Jasons Market Place, Kinokuniya, Amazon and EpiCentre. Other card spend of S$1.60 gives you two Membership Rewards points. These points do not expire and can be redeemed for retail, dining, groceries, travel and more.

To qualify for the card, you need a minimum income of S$30,000 for Singapore citizens and residents or S$60,000 for expatriates. There is an annual fee of S$120 and S$75 per supplementary card.

There will be a roadshow by American Express at Chevron House from 30 November to 4 December from 10.30am to 7.30pm where you can find out more about the card, apply for one and get a gift as well as enjoy complimentary coffee from 11.30am onwards.

------------------

Looks like Amex is re-releasing the classic Green card as a charge card for SG market. No details found on amex website yet but other news source said 30k p.a and 5x points for every $1.60 spent at select merchant. Who's getting this card?

I remember having the Blue Credit card. Annual fee less. Charge card annual fees are higher.

Isn't charge card mean prepaid card like 702?

Nope, not prepaid.

What is a charge card?
A charge card allows you to manage your cash flow effectively. With no-pre set spending limit*, your purchasing power can increase over time as you use your card.

For the financially savvy consumer, a charge card makes good sense. Because your statement must be paid in full each month, many people find a charge card helps them control spending.

Purchasing power
With a charge card, you are granted more purchasing power with no pre-set spending limit*. While your spending is not unlimited, your purchases are approved based on a variety of factors, including your credit record, account history and personal resources. Proof of resources and security may be required.

* As per MAS regulations, no pre-set spending limit on your Charge Card may be granted only if your current income is at least S$120,000 p.a. If your income is between S$30,000 p.a. and S$120,000 p.a., your limit may be set to up to four times your monthly income combined for all your Credit and Charge Cards with American Express.

I guess the "no spending limit" does not apply to majority of us.

9 point = 5 KrisFlyer Miles

Selected 5x merchant = $2.91 for 1 mile
2x merchant = $7.27 for 1 mile

Think you got it wrong.

5X Merchant = $1.60 gives 5 points = 2.78KF miles, so rate is $0.58/mile
2X Merchant = $1.60 gives 2 points = 1.11KF miles, so rate is $1.44/mile

Same rates as that of the Platinum Credit Card.

Yes sorry you are correct. I forgot to multiply by 5(miles) after dividing by 9(points) :s13:

I guess the chip kind of ruined the clean green look, but that's probably not a negotiable part of the card design.

Yeah... other than the classic look of the card (which is less classic with the chip), I'm not sure why anyone would want this card. What exactly are the perks?

Even the gold charge card (which I assume is higher tier) seems rather underwhelming, to me...
