Apple addresses iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max “scratchgate” concerns

Apple responded to reports of scratches and scuffs on the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Shortly after last Friday’s launch, photos and reports began circulating of scratches and scuffs on the iPhone 17 Pro display units in Apple Stores and other retailers. The marks were most noticeable on models with darker finishes, particularly on the back and edges of the camera bar. When contacted by 9to5Mac, Apple offered the following explanations:

They are not scratches

Apple determined that the imperfections are caused by worn MagSafe stands used in some of its retail stores. The company also clarified that these are not actual scratches, but rather “material transfer from the stand to the phone,” which can be removed with cleaning. To address this issue, Apple is replacing affected MagSafe stands in its stores.

Small abrasions can happen over time

The camera plateau edges share similar traits with the anodised aluminium casings of other Apple products such as the MacBooks. These edges have passed Apple’s stringent durability tests, but normal wear and tear – including minor abrasions – can still occur over time.

If you’re concerned about scratches or scuffs on the iPhone 17 Pro, take a look at our recommended cases and accessories. They offer extra protection and peace of mind against everyday drops and bumps.

The jerryrigeverything video have shown this too.
The main issue is the sharp contour of the camera island. That one is material loss, worst then scratches..

Today we are going to durability test the new iPhone 17. This is the regular iPhone 17 and not the iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone AIR. We already did those tests and you can find them below. In this durability test of Apples latest phone we are going to scratch test the back glass with Silver, copper, and gold, along with stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium. Cuz... you know... that is just an interesting thing to do.
