Does anyone know if one can use Apple Super Drive to boot up from Win 8 and install Win 8 on Boot Camp?

I bought an Asus external DVD drive for $65 as its cheaper than Super Drive. It said compatible with Mac on the box but when I opened it and read the manual it said it can't be used to boot up Win 8 disc. Which means I have a white elephant.

Is the problem because its an external drive or because its not an Apple Super Drive? Anyone knows?

to boot up windows disc u have to run it on boot camp. another way is to run in mac if u have not installed windows yet. extract or download the .iso from microsoft and use bootcamp create a bootup thumbdrive and install ur windows 8 from there

That's what I did and it was a major pain in the arse. So for Win 10 I am intending to buy the DVD and install via DVD instead of going via ISO and USB.

So the question is, if I have a Win 10 (or Win 8 as the example may be) DVD, will I be able to boot up with it using Super Drive? Because apparently the Asus external DVD drive can't.

u mean boot up as fresh install? boot camp not set? u cant boot up using super drive if boot camp not set. u need to use boot camp to partition ur hard drive and format into ntfs format.manually partition wont allow u to format into ntfs during installation.using osx bootcamp alllows u to download the necessary drive for the windows as well.

assuming u setup bootcamp and everything. did u press and hold the "Option" key when u hear the start up sound?

why pain in the ass? i think is much easier just download the iso and create a bootable thumbdrive

When you run boot camp set up it will reach a stage where it tells you it will restart and install Win. That's when I should pop in the DVD.

Pain in the arse because the ISO is in exe format so I had to download Win 7 trial just to run the exe file to obtain the ISO.

So even Apple Super Drive is unable to boot up with the Win 8 DVD?

I've installed Windows 8.1 Boot Camp with External Super Drive.
So after you did the Boot Camp partition, when the system rebooted, it was able to boot off the Win 8.1 DVD and you could install it?

That's what I need to know because apparently the stupid Asus external DVD I bought can't which makes it useless for my needs.

Yes, installation was done with a physical retail copy of Windows 8.1 via an external Super Drive to a late 2013 retina MacBook Pro 15".

Thanks. Should have bought this instead. Read all those "wonderful" reviews online saying $108 is waste of money when other people selling for less. Ended up buying an Asus for $65 and turns out it can't boot a Win 8.1 DVD. TMD!!!
