any particular reason for giving such an advice? because of warranty or other concerns?

his not giving any advise. mainly sharing his purchase experiences.

i bought 3x router from JD. so far no issues

to me.. why not local?
i care abt warranty loh.
but i'm not willing to pay >30% cost for the warranty.

no right or wrong lah.
just a personal choice.

same as those who are willing to buy parallel imported cars hehe

For aimesh node? Last year I bought a Linksys router flashed to asus rt ac68u to use as a aimesh node, in chinese but you just need to go through configuration one time, rest of config as per main router.

I will try my luck as well this time. I just bought the Asus RT-AX82U China version at about RMB869 (S$177) from Taobao, with 7% GST and the shipment, it will be below S$195 in the end, much cheaper than local version (MediaPro 11.11 offer price is S$335).

Previously I bought Huawei AX3 Pro China version and it works fine.

But local ASUS is 3 years warranty.

I understand. It is just a personal choice.

That is also why I say that "I will try my luck as well this time". I have less confidence in Asus router hardware quality than Linksys myself but Asus FW and long term support are much better. I will try my luck anyway this time.

I almost bought the TUF AX3000 local set from Lazada (S$229 offer) but decided against it in the end yesterday evening as there was a hack to activate 4T4R to make it function as RT-AX82U. But later I felt the hack may not be stable.

hello all, i am using a asus rt ax88u from m1. but the wireless network in my master bedroom is very poor, so i am thinking of buying another asus router connected via lan port to the main router in living room and used as Aimesh to enhance coverage.

the router in master bedroom will also be connected via lan to sonos speaker and short-throw projector.

i am thinking of buying asus router from taobao, maybe a rt-82u (i am a noob, i just roughly read and it seems to be a good router suggested around here)

just wanted to check - is there any configuration required if i were to buy the router from taobao? i.e. any flashing of software etc etc? i am really a noob so i am hoping it can be a plug-and-play scenario even if i were to buy the asus router from taobao (because it is far cheaper). the price comes into play because i may need to get another 1 to put in study.

thanks in advance!

I think you can refer to Xiaofan reply in other thread. Think FW is basically the same

Yeah, I was reading around. Saw this post in another thread from xiaofan, mentioning that AIMesh may have problem due to different country codes.

So I guess I probably need to purchase from Singapore Asus instead then.

I have an Asus from taobao, no problem setting up Aimesh paired with local unit. Perhaps some models work well and some don't.

Can I ask, if you don't mind, which model did you get from taobao?

My use case is to put one in master bedroom as AIMesh to enhance WiFi, and to connect to a pair of Sonos speaker + short throw projector via lan cables.

Any recommendation on a good model for such a use case? The main router now is RT-AX88U, bought together when I sign with M1 plan

I bought tuf ax5400 during one of the sales. Aimesh setup was pretty much plug and play, the software auto detect and it was good to go.

I don't have the AX88U so can't comment on the compatibility. Based on your setup description, if things don't work you can still use the taobao router as an wired AP since you won't be moving your sonos or projector around the house? Of course trade-off will be having separate wifi ssid.

depend how high u value the local warranty.
ppl buy lots of high value stuffs overseas now.
phones, TV...etc
or even parallel imported cars

Interestingly I got 4 network related equipments being used in the console area (not counting SingTel provided ZTE ONT and SingTel TV box), three were bought from Taobao. Only the TP-Link TL-SG105E is bought from local Challenger store.

Asus RT-AX82U China version

Huawei AX3 Pro China version

A Intel Mini J4105PC (used to run pfSense, now runs Ubuntu Linux server and I am trying stuff like Pi-hole and virtual OpenWRT docker image, not so successful yet)
