My 3 month old Asus UX303UB has had random hangings ever since new :(. Configuration below :

Intel® Core™ i7 6500U Processor
Original Win 10 out of box, upgraded to Professional
4GB memory
IPS QHD+ Screen (3200 x 1800)
NVIDIA® GeForce® 940M
1TB HDD
Mainly connected to external monitor via HDMI

When it hangs, the screen just freezes and I will have to force a hard reboot. Some days it can hang 6 times a day, other times it goes for over a week without a single incident.

I did a HDD scan and memory scan and both come up fine. Any ideas what can be the cause of this ?

in cases like this, try troubleshooting software.
years ago, I would encounter random hangups with utorrent.

Can try a factory restore too

Agree... it's likely a software issue. Try resetting to factory conditions. Test the fresh Win10 installation for a while with minimal software installed. Then add the software you install one by one. Isolate the software that is causing the problem.
