I think it's time to introduce these new formats to HWZ, and some links to what they are:

Atmos is here earlier and you can find more info about it

As a result of my auditioning for the new sound formats, I have come across a few setups, and here's a personal recommendation for Atmos:

Using the Marantz SR 7009 as the amp
(you can also use a Denon or other similar priced models)

KEF LS 50 for the 7 base channels - L & R, C, S, SB - for a slightly lower budget, Usher 520s / 525s are not bad too.

Anthony Gallo Micros for the four ceilings - or two if space / budget doesn't allow it

Jl Audio E 112 or Rythmik F12

Sony BDP 7200 4k capable player - you can also use an Oppo 103.

Add Belden / Monoprice 12 AWG surround cables - you can also use QED micro / 79 cables

Atacama / Target stands

Should be around 10k or so.

Spend the rest on new software...

*** again, this is my personal choice, and your sonic tastes may differ ****

Atmos HT purchase advice required.

Hello all,

I am looking for recommendation on a home theater system (dolby atmos enabled)

For the home theater, would be looking at the following:

Receivers: 2 - 2.5k budget (researched options including Marantz and Denon, but any other notable suggestions?) Need to be capable of 7.1.2.

Sub-woofer: Budget of 1 - 1.5k. Looking for just 1 large sub will do.

Front and center speakers: Not interested in floor towers, would prefer bookshelf speakers with stand (required). Any recommendations inc stands? Each speaker's budget would be 500 to 700. (max for the 3 is 2k) Perhaps something from KEF/Klipsch/JBL(?).

Side and rears: no restrictions as long as they pair well with the receivers and front channels. Budget would be maybe 300 ea.

Ceiling: Will be preferably mounting on ceiling so wont need those upward ceiling firing kind. no real restrictions and same as the sides and rears as long as they go well together. I suppose on a 2 ceiling set up the positioning of the speakers should be directly overhead from where you will be sitting?

Mounting: How do people go about mounting surround speakers and hiding the cables to the receiver (placed at the front)? Really not too sure what is the method of how to mount these and what the mounting systems usually costs.

Cables: How to effectively and efficiently manage cabling works? Receiver is placed front center below TV.

Audio works: Wall materials/lining, speaker and woofer base isolation pads. Do I need these and how much do these costs generally?

Total budget: 7 - 9k (with all necessary material, cabling and peripherals included)

Room size: About 20ft * 40ft in a rectangular layout. TV and receiver placed on the 20ft end. Seated position would be somewhere along the 30-35 ft line.

Atmos system: would you all recommend 5.1.4 or 7.1.2?

Usage: Movies, gaming, general entertainment.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully anyone can point me in the right direction for any research on this topic.

Hi!

Quite a few people asked about my setup costs, so I thought I'll make a post.

Marantz SR 7011 was around 1700
SVS Prime Series with Tower x2, Satellite x 2, Center x 1, SB-2000 Sub x1 was around 5300
Yamaha In Ceilings x 4 was 400 from TaoBao
Wires was around 150

I did it during a house reno so installation of the cables and false ceiling cutouts was around 300

The maths doesn't add up..
500 per piece and 300 per piece for the sides/rears multiplied by 11 channels doesn't allow you much money for the AVR / Sub / cables.

Remember, more speakers = less money for each piece.

See how others set it up, unfortunately there are less Atmos setups in HWZ, you can try Xtremeplace.com and search for Atmos for more info too.

For a neat job, you need to cut into the walls/concretes or hide them in false ceilings and feature walls.
You can use a speaker socket panel.

Use the Atmos / DTS-X as a guide, and there's a lot of trial and error.

Using 4 ceiling speaker has been noted to give a better surround in smaller rooms than 7 speakers in the base layer.

As for which amp to use, after you build up the spec and feature list, an audition is important, especially with the speakers you intend to use.
It may not be practical to audition it with all 11 speakers, but if it sounds good in stereo and the centre channel is solid, then you are on the right path.
Shops like Alpha Audio, KEC and AV One have many options in their stores, go and chat with them and listen to some systems first. See what your money can buy.
Good luck bro!

Atmos setup if include installation are expensive.
If you are looking at cheap setup than just for standard
5.1 speaker which will not break more than $1k.

But again depend on your source.
I hope please don't discuss Atmos playback other than 4K UHD disc here.
Like use software encoding to enable Atmos and etc. methods.

These are not true Dolby Atmos format just software emulation only.
4K UHD those are native tracks recorded on it thus that is pure form.
Always consider your source, if you got Atmos content than
get a Atmos setup.

If streaming services like Netflix and etc. than 5.1 will do
fine.
Even though Netflix supports Dolby Atmos that to me is just
a compressed form of it.
(Streaming videos and music usually have to be compressed
if will affect the bandwidth and buffer time.)

Auro3D good?

Q I want to install a Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 speaker configuration using ceiling speakers for both overhead height effects and the left/right surrounds. How would you recommend I go about positioning the speakers? —Tuck Seng

A Dolby’s installation guidelines specify the use of ceiling speakers to convey the overhead height effects in Atmos soundtracks. For a 5.1.2 speaker setup, you would install a pair of ceiling speakers slightly in front of the main viewing position as shown in the above illustration.

While you could get away with using ceiling speakers for the surrounds in an Atmos setup, Dolby doesn’t recommend it. The company’s installation guidelines instead suggest that surround speakers should be installed in pairs at the same height level as the main left/right speakers at the front of the room. Why? Clear separation between the sound coming from the overhead height-plane and the listener-level speakers is required to get best performance from Atmos. With both speaker types bunched together on the ceiling, the system’s ability to clearly convey height effects in Atmos soundtracks will be reduced.
