My hostels for 15 nights average out to 50 per night.

That's not very cheap for triple-sharing hostel. You can find triple rooms in business hotels for ard Y10,000, which is abt $40 per pax on current exchange rates.

In fact, check out Hotel Chuo Selene in Osaka; it's about $70 ($35/pax) for a twin room. http://www.chuogroup.jp/selene/en/

I stayed at Hotel Raizan South in Osaka for about 1900yen per night (single private room with TV and mini fridge, but shared toilet/showers).

It is located very near Doubutsuenmae subway station, and is about 5mins walk from ShinImamiya station.
From Kansai Airport, you can take the cheaper Nankai Airport Express (890yen, 45mins) directly to ShinImamiya station...instead of the usual Haruka Express train which is more expensive and only stops at Tennoji/Shin-Osaka/Kyoto.

Ya, i considered the Raizan as well, but personal toilet is very impt to me. :)

Did u try the very cheap and good yakiniku place there? And what's amazing about that area is that it has a Tamade supermarket just 10 min walk away!

Mount Fuji is quite difficult to get to using the JR Pass. The train you have to take is really slow. It's actually better to take the bus from Shinjuku.

Our JR Pass was purchased with the intent to go from Mount Fuji area to Kyoto and then Kyoto to Toyko. :)
We intend to check out areas around Mount Fuji too hence the 2 days stay :)

Friends intend to climb, but i read that this isn't the season... So we'll play by ear.

That leaves you with around 1000SGD for transport and all. If you're taking JR to another city that will take out another 2 - 400?

I'm bringing 1.3 to 1.5 and my credit card (emergency) for 16 days.

accommodation: $35 x 13 days = $455
airfare: $540
JR pass: $350 estimate

that leaves u $655 for 13 days, which is about $50 or 4000yen per day for food, transport, admission tickets, and shopping.

it is doable, assuming a budget of 500yen for breakfast, 1000yen for lunch and 1000yen for dinner. assuming major trips covered by JR, so transport shld be within city, so less than 1000yen a day enuf, probably even lesser. admission tickets shld be okay as well, unless u are going to themeparks such as disneyland or USJ. no shopping though... u will have to use whatever is leftover for shopping. if not then use credit card

Thanks for all the help!
With our cabin size baggage, we moved with ease though we faced space shortage.

Many whites use backpacks, not much of a hindrance on the trains.

There's still a lot of ice on top.
Don't underestimate Fuji-san :D

Took a bus to 5th Station, climbed up to a little past 6th station, it was a little challenging, there's ice along the way and snow at the peak.

Shinkansen not very luggage friendly

but sometimes if there is no one sitting beside you etc, you can actually leave your luggage there :)

Cabin sized luggage is not an issue. Front or back of Shins also have storage area for larger ones.
