The run-of-the-mill Nike Cheyenne backpack in all black is very safe and it's an excellent workhorse - it can take a beating and you don't have to baby it. Also it's really affordable:

FYI, I have a thing for all black bags.
+1 to this. Using it now and loving its good looks (slick and easy to match) and practicality (able to expand, waterproof and lifetime warranty).
the only con its its price.
IMO most important thing is the straps - how are they padded and designed.. Some backpacks look good but have straps that bit into your shoulder.I own a good range of backpacks and my opinion in looking for backpack is to first check out the height of the backpack.
thats regarding the bag construction. if the size is not right, no matter how padded the straps are, it will still feel uncomfy carrying for long duration. but i agree the straps are important, just that most people ignore the importance of bag height.IMO most important thing is the straps - how are they padded and designed..
