Hello

I am looking for a Backup solution. I have two Old PC's each has 1TB x SATA Hard disk(Totally 2 Hard DIsks SATA). Besides I have one 500GB IDE hard disk and one IDE 1 TB hard disk.

I want to move all data to one location and access from my laptop. I do not need these data daily basis but I do access once or twice in a month. Total data on all Hard disk is estimated only 750 GB (Include all data)

My Budget is max S$250

I am considering the following

Option 1

----> seagate-central

If I buy the Seagate device with 3 TB Drive I can consolidate all my data in one disk.

The cost approximately S$240

I read review in Amazon.com that the drive is very solow when upload. One user even complaint 100GB data upload takes 150 hours.

Option 2:

---> Dlink DNS-320L

The cost approximately S$99 for the device.
I may able to use my existing hard disk (1 TB x 2 Disks )

Option 3

Buy a 3.5" or 2.5" portable USB disk and just plug in.

Approx cost S$ 175 for 3 TB

Option 4

-----> synology 2-Bay DS214se Marvell 800Mhz 256MB

Cost of device S$200 approx. Re-use my 1TB Hard disk.

Request your help
1. What is a better choice?
2. Anyone used Seagate central or Western Digital DNS 320L before? Please share your experience. Appreciate

Thank you all

For usb connection, you need USB3.0 for both desktop/laptop and external drive for fast transfer. You are stuck at 25mb/s for USB 2.0.

For NAS, you need gigabit connection from source to destination and a fast NAS too.

Don't throw all data in one disk. Seperate them because if one disk up lorry, say good bye to your data. Go think about it.

Either option 3 or 4, with 4, you got data redundancy in raid 1.

buy a 2 bay (Raid 1) NAS like Synology and then an extra 1TB ext hdd (HGST Touro)

As you need to reformat/"clean" your 2x1TB old sata disks for use on your NAS, you need to migrate all your existing data to a 1TB ext hdd. Honestly USB 2.0 or 3.0 doesn't matter as you are just doing one off transfer. If you want to use back your old 1TB IDE which is not recommended, you can buy an external casing and use it as a ext drive as mentioned above but I would suggest you buy a brand new 1TB Touro ($80?) as it will also be the backup drive of your Raid 1 NAS.

I think the easiest for non tech savvy is to have 1 tb harddisk for each pc, use dropbox pro (1tb 100usd/year) as backup and sync.

For laptop can just go dropbox online and download?

You do not need an NAS if you are not intending to share the data with multiple PC/laptops at the same time. Moreover, low-end NAS are extremely slow. Operating an NAS do require some technical knowledge too.

Cheapest solution: Buy an external casing and re-use your 1TB hard disk. Probably about $30-50. This is the most cost-efficient since you seldom access your data and do not require network capabilities (just plug in directly).

If you want RAID1 redundancy like what an NAS offers, just get a 2-bay external casing with RAID capability (e.g. hotway). With USB 3.0, it can hit 100+MB/s, compared to 15-25MB/s of a low-end NAS. Cost only $115 (hard disks excluded). You can re-use your existing 1TB and buy 1 additional 1TB.
