balayage and perm, possible?

I was thinking of getting a balayage, but was told that after doing so, it is not advisable to do a perm as it will damage hair further. has anyone had a similar experience? I wish to have wavy hair which does not require styling with curling iron daily, but if perm is out, are there other more gentle yet permanent options?
