Need some help determining a basic rig for word processing, browsing the web and watching 1080 videos on YouTube. The rig will also be used to store photos and occasionally used for Lightroom/Photoshop.

Will be good if the CPU case can be silent... e.g. Fractal Design R4?

Budget: $1000 without monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse

Some time ago there was a pre-independence day deal with the Intel NUC6i3SYH going for US$239.99 on Amazon, includes SG plug in box. Now $ 289 but still no GST.

Note: SYH model supports M.2+2.5" drive, SYK supports only single m.2 drive.

  • Has built in Intel AC Wi-Fi
  • Add ~US$60 for 16GB RAM
  • For storage, can get M.2 SSD locally Qoo10
  • Mass storage, 2.5" buy or reuse 2.5" HDD if you have them
  • Definitely comfortable under 1k
  • NUC box will very likely sit on your monitor's stand taking up minimal space
Of course for better $:performance ratio if you go full DIY

Thanks @Encrypted11

Was hoping to complete the build at SLS, had previously built a rig at PCThemes and quite happy with their service. I want the rig to be used for a few years so I think need to get some of the latest components, especially the CPU... Skylake?

The Skylake onboard GPU should be able to handle YouTube and the occasional usage of Lightroom right?

Need expertise from HWZ for the mobo and CPU... I been looking at the PCThemes price list... blur

Also, what PSU to get?

Buying the rig for someone, doubtful that Mac will be intuitive enough for him.

Any significant difference between i5 4590 vs i5 6500?

Yeap a pentium or i3 would be more than suffice. And in a intel NUC would be good enough. Small and compact.

What's a good Skylake i3 mobo/CPU bundle to take?

Your needs are really low, and your budget is relatively really high. You can basically use whatever you fancy. Don't waste your money on high end stuff

If you are willing to go down the AMD route, I would suggest a 78xxk APU bundled with a wraith cooler based system for a bit of future proofing. You should spend no more than $600 on these parts buying online or local.
