my current one needs upgrading.
currently, mine is just running win7, 4 x 1tb in software raid 5 via ICH9r with the OS on a separate smaller hdd. powered by a platinum PSU and simple core2duo CPU on a cheap mobo with ICH9r. the contents are then backed up to online cloud backup. the file server is controlled via teamviewer and runs 24hrs.
but recently realised the heat building up caused hdd degradation. and the use of cheap components (second hand CPU, mobo) causes lots of downtime.
now i intend to upgrade but still remain raid 5 (for the redundancy) and software raid (because the speed is equally good and less dependent on hardware).
should i still built from the ground up like i did in the past or should i buy those enterprise type like HP proliant or dell etc. i don't want NAS cause that would be hardware dependent.
if i do the custom way, it will definitely use brand new components this time. most probably the lowest powered haswell chip with 4 x 3tb enterprise grade hdd.
this time, i need to get UPS because i realise every black out caused a rebuilt.
would those servers from hp or dell be better or worst of?
thanks for your advice.
