Hey all, been lurking around for some time and I'd like some help with a new PC. I noticed there are some old threads which are similar but I had some questions so I thought it'll be better to make a new thread since skylake is in...please go easy on me XD

I'm not a hardcore gamer but when I do play games like Batman arkham knight and the coming star wars battlefront, I expect to be able to play them on middle-high settings. Other than that its just occasional league, and lots of powerpoint.

Other requirements -
Budget 2.5k with monitor, don't need keyboard and mouse, need wifi pci card, have creative usb audio driver.
Would like it to be as silent ...and future proof as much as possible.

CPU & Mobo combo: Preferably skylake
GPU: GTX 970 or R9 (wondering if AMD bankruptcy possibility is going to impact anything)
Memory: is 8 gb ram really enough?
SSD: 500gb Samsung SSD
Case: Define R5 black (no window)

What are your thoughts on monitors? Saw this ~29 inch samsung monitor at sim lim but forgot to take picture, costed less than 600 vs other models. On gmarket the LG UM65 is going at about $650, but only 1 year warranty. Need a big screen for multitasking.

Thanks for everyone's input in advance!

Will give your PC the most 3 years of "futureproofing" even if you buy the best parts available today. By then new tech will interest you to splurge again :s13:

For now, Skylake doesn't offer any selling point except for better M.2 support and socket upgradability. Check out the reviews first. :o

Cos they are mainly directed at Haswell-E using quad channel DDR4. You should see more dual channel kits popping out within next few weeks. Then again they are still noticeably more expensive compared to DDR3 and Skylake isn't a compelling upgrade over Haswell. :(

Hi MoneyFace, thanks for the info.

Currently I'm waiting to see the how big is the pricing differences gap :s13:
I'm upgrading from a very old system, so its better to go for skylake if I'm able to afford?

Haswell-E should cost the same, but having 6 cores and quad channel DDR4 and many many PCIe 3.0 lanes...

Performance wise between the CPUs it doesnt seem like much difference. But power consumption and other features? The reviews are all mixed though, perhaps they are advocating buying new tech? And there's this talk about a trump card hidden just in case AMD chu stun :/

If DDR4 is about the same price, I'll just get that. Will look at prices later...

so is 8gb ram really enough?

skylake = reduced gaming performance, inferior overclocking compared to haswell. not to mention those who want to upgrade need new mobo for this new socket
wccf is junk clickbait site

anyway ... ppl are realizing skylake takes 2666mhz ram to match or surpass haswell in gaming benches
