Buying a mid range Gaming PC

Hi guys,

Haven't posted here for a long while and would like to seek some opinion on buying a assembled PC at SLS.

Been reading through forums and is a $1.400 to $1.500 without monitor Budget reasonable ? Only probably playing Path of exile and WoW and some other RPGs.

Any recommendation on a basic setup?
I haven used AMD for a while but it seems the Ryzen 1600 is comparable to intel ones.. I have been reading this as a reference

Is 16Gb ram overkill for The above mentioned games?

Also, if I am getting a GeForce 1060 3mb, what monitor range should I be aiming for?

1.5K for a budget rig is certainly doable.

The i5-8400 has an edge in games while the Ryzen 1600 might be better overall with the extra 6 threads and cheaper B350 boards. Either option will make for a good rig.

16GB is the norm nowadays but since DDR4 is very expensive now, you can make do with 8GB first.

For GTX 1060, 1080 is the suggested resolution but 1440 may be possible if you are prepared to lower graphic setttings.

Computer idiot here but 1040 and 1440 is resolution? Isn't higher better I have some knowledge of pc hardwares but just completely noob when it comes to how to goose the correct or most suitable monitor for best use of graphic card

2560X1440 will look better than 1920X1080 but is more demanding on the graphics card. So if you want to go for the higher resolution, then you might want to consider GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 instead.

I'd like to think that 1400 is a good amount for a decent build.

That said, with iptel being a douche with corfee lake, you'd likely find pre-built pc with the last generation Kaby lake. Not that it's bad, it's just.... an i3 8100 cost less and supposedly performs slightly better than a i5 7500 (like wut).

Look at it from another point of view

You buy a Coffeelake now , one will get whammied with 2 points
1. Overpriced Z370 mobo
2. OVerpriced DDR4 Ram

Once cheaper mobos come out, you'll find that the resale value has just dropped coz cheaper, mobos which are just as good are available. With Ram prices at an all time high, one will also be pumping money and losing it, when ram prices correct itself.

Existing configuration insert what gen 4 / 6 / 7 give one value for money status as their ram prices are generally lower than new DDR 4 prices

Check second hand prices for B85 / H97 / Z97. One will see that the price difference of a value board is not that much different that that of a premium chipset board considering features remain somewhat equal.

As such, unless one is going after bragging rights of the latest coffee lake, one may get better value with older I7s until the better configuration of an I5-8400 + cheaper chipset motherboards are readily available.

As CPU needs for gaming have somewhat stagnated as compared to GFX needs, one may want to pump a larger percentage of the budget towards getting a better GFX

FHD Gaming = 10603gb sufficient, 10606gb better or 1070 Good
QHD Gaming = 1070 sufficient, 1070TI better, 1080 Good
UHD / VR Gaming = 1080 sufficient, 1080TI good
