Camera for taking northern lights

Hi,
I'm a noob in photography. I depends 100% on my iPhone for photo taking for all my travel.
I have a canon SX230 compact camera which I seldom use.
Do I need a special camera to take nice northern lights scenery or it could be done using my iPhone or the existing compact camera?

How about a GoPro?
