You have to see which area you want to go to, current "hot" trends imho are
1. Cyber-security - general programming skills needed to analyze the logic of malware
2. Business Analytics - programming skills needed to develop .NET or Java based applications
3. Enterprise Private/Hybrid Cloud - programming skills needed for DevOps and automation. Chef, Puppet, Powershell
4. Big Data/Data Warehousing, Data Virtualization - Greenplum, tableau, delphix.
You can enroll in diploma courses or just attack any one of the areas above to start, IT now is vastly different from early 2000s...mainly because of Social media (Facebook, Instagram), e-commerce sites (Alibaba, Taobao), Internet of Things, BYOD, Virtualization, and IT security.
