Cannot access D:\ I/O Error, please help

I have A42J ASUS laptop, it recently have problems booting up to Windows 7 hence I tried to recover the laptop using recovery disk which reinstalls the OS into c:\ partition but should have left D:\ data as it used to be. However now I can no longer access D:\ which keeps stating the I/O error. But the c:\ drive with the OS installed seems ok and both of them are refering to the same hard disk. Can anyone please help and guide me so that I can access D:\ drive. Thank you.
