I've been using my PS4 controller as a gaming controller as well as a media remote all thanks to DS4windows.

Step 1) When you 1st connect, the PS4 Controller LED will be white. If there is no light, you might have to go to Device Manager and uninstall the Gamepad driver for your PS4.

Step 2) On DS4windows, go to Settings -> Scroll all the way to the right -> Controller/Driver Setup -> Install DS4 Driver -> Finish.
Certain games might recognize it as a PS4 controller so to make it completely Xbox, tick the 'Hide DS4 Controller' in the settings tab.
Then after all that, then connect your PS4 Controller to your PC.

Step 3) If it still doesn't work, again at Settings, scroll right and choose 'Uninstall VBus Driver' then click on 'Uninstall'
Then repeat the first previous processes in Step 2 again.

If you are looking for Native support, Steam is currently supporting it in its Beta Client. Once everything is fine, it will come to Steam and you'll be able to use the PS4 controller without any 3rd party drivers/softwares like DS4windows

FYI for those who are using dualshock 4 for PC.
Sony have released the official wireless dongle
for you to connect so don't need third party software.

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/accessories/dualshock-4-usb-wireless-adaptor/

Locally I do not know whether any game shops got carry so you have ask.
Sony store does not have it as I have check.

Is it possible to use without the dongle? i think my problem is pc not detecting the controller when i plug it in. which causes the ds4windows to not detecting it as well

PS4 dualshock is Sony proprietary accessories, Sony did
not license it to use with MS Windows/PC/MAC in fact.

Hence no proper driver or support if you just plug in like that.
That controller is more than just a controller, it have more
function like speaker, touch control, connect headset to it
and etc.

Even the LED is a feature, it have various LED lighting especially
if you are playing multiplayer like BF it will show your team color.

Should have just get a plug and play windows controller from Logitech
save you all the trouble.
PS4 controller is for PS4 and it serve more than just a controller.

So much function even windows/mac cannot detect it as just a controller hence it cannot work.

The dongle is for those who don't have Bluetooth in their computer. If you connect to it using USB, it will achieve the same effect.
Also, no drivers need to be installed because you are supposed to use the Playstation software on your PC to connect to your Playstation. Not for playing PC games.

Thus, until Steam's next update that allows you to use your PS4 controller natively, you will still have to use DS4windows.
