Hi Everyone,

I intended to book Cathay Pacific air tickets from Singapore to Taiwan but I understand that there is a stopover at Hongkong. As I am quite new to stopover issue, I have the following question to enquire:

- After stopover at Hongkong, do I have to check out and collect my luggage. Then again check in again from Hongkong to Taiwan?

- Do I have to collect the bording tickets again from Hongkong Airport for Hongkong to Taiwan? Or I will only have 1 boarding tickets from Singapore to Taiwan which I have collected at Changi Airport?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Depends on what your supposed "stopover" means. Technically, any stop more than 24 then is considered a stopover. You should be merely transiting through HKG (< 24 hours). If that is true and if you are on CX all the way and on 1 ticket, your luggage will be checked through automatically and you will not have to re-check-in / collect your luggage in HKG. You should get 2 boarding passes at SIN and at TPE (since not direct flight).

However, if you have a stopover in HKG (ie > 24 hours), you will have to collect your luggage in HKG. Stopover is meant for you to spend some time touring that stopover country.

you do not have to collect your luggage, it'll be transferred to hte next plane. there's no check in required except for going through another round of screening of personal belongings.

you'll be given 2 boarding tickets at changi airport. SIN - HK and HK - TAIPEI.
don't worry, it's quite simple, took me less than 10 mins to exit from the plane to the waiting hall in hong kong.

Hi Fone & Gabester,

Thanks for your reply. My stopover at Hongkong is 1 hour only. Because Cathay do not have direct flight from Singapore to Taiwan.

Should I say after alighting the plane at hongkong, I do not need to do anything or collect my luggage. I just proceed straight to the departure gate and wait for the flight from Hongkong to Taiwan?

Kindly advise.

Thank you

Then that is called transit, not a stopover.

At HKG, you will need to alight from the plane together with all your carry on items. Then depending what is the airport's system, you might have to go through security again to get to your next gate, my only transit experience in HKG was quite a few years back liao, so I can't remember.

Hi Roadrunner,

Thanks for your reply. I intend to book from 30th Dec - 8th Jan. Was quite surprised that it is more worth it to book Cathay than jetstar. How much did you pay for per pax? Did you buy insurance ? How much is it ? Lastly, did you book through Cathay pacific website ?

Hi Roadrunner / Dominator,

I just took CX for SIN-TPE-HKG-SIN. (21 Oct- 27 Oct)

I took the 8.30am flight and reached TPE airport at around 3pm (on schedule)

Stopover 2 days in HKG. Total Fee is $522 nett. Booked through CX online as well.

As mentioned by fone,

There'll be some CX staff just as you exit from the plane in HKG. Pls inform them that you are flying to TPE. She will assist to lead you to go through a security clearance and then to your next departure gate.

PLS remember to book your seats online 48hrs before your flight. You can do so for SIN-HKG and HKG-TPE.

Reason being, the flights I took was at least 98% full for economy. It's better to seat together if you aren't travelling alone.

The food, in-flight service dropped, probably due to the much cheaper fares they selling compared to SQ.

Hi,

While doing some research on Cathay air tickets, notice there are some catagories:

Economy Supersaver
Economy Save
Economy Special
Economy Core
Economy Standard
Economy Flex

For Economy Supersaver , it stated Pre-Booking of the seats is not permitted.
I understand that Cathay only can book the seats 48hours before our flight. Does that means for Economy Supersaver, I cannot book my seat at all ? Their system pick the seat for us ?

Please advise.

Thank you.

one thing to note

while it is true and common for luggage to be check-thru to Taipei, but do CHECK again when you receive your baggage tag from the check-in staff that indicate the final destination is Taipei.

Similarly for your return trip, check that your baggage tag indicate Singapore as the final destination.

check-in staff are only human so they may overlook then only tag your bag to hong kong.

Can I check, is 55 mins enough for the transit?

A bit tough. You need to go through some security checking b4 boarding your transit plane. If the queue is long, it might take some time. That's my experience taking Cathay Pacific to Taiwan last year transit in HK.
