The thing about getting foreign currency, most of the time, it is cheaper to get it here. Just think, why would a money changer in that country want to have S$ in store? For the odd customer who wants it? Hardly worth the while, is it not?
You stand your best chances with the money changers at Raffles Place. It is a coin toss as to whether you will ultimately save by going through an intermediary currency like USD or Euro.

you might as well not post

i ask precisely because i need to be subjected to the exchange rate twice

first u said its cheaper to get it here, then u said they are not likely to accept sgd there. (which was my point again) so whats ur pt?

obviously i know most of the time its better to exchange it here. i also know that the exchange at arcade or something is a good bet. im asking so that i dont make a wasted trip down.

i have been to ulu places that accepts many currencies, including sgd. which i didnt expect. maybe u'll get a worse rate but they will still accept. so i asked.

if nothing constructive dont be a smart alec and act like a know-it-all. maybe u THINK u r well traveled, but dont post for nothing.

Despite your rude reply to other posters, I will just let you know that you cannot change Russian Roubles here in Singapore. Do not think anyone stocks those in Singapore, even Amex. IF yes, I guess their rate is not fantastic too. What I do is change to Euros in Singapore and use Euros to change in the Moscow Airport itself. You can use USD also.

Gasband, you are actually wrong
Esplanade exchange there is a indian money charger shop who holds russian rubles. Be warned that the rates they offers are really lousy... and the rates they offer to buy back rubles to sgd is even more ridiculous

ive been there, you can just change there, its easier. but bring us dollars or euro, most money changers there only take USD EUR,these are found on the new Arbat Avenue.
theres one near the bolshoy theatre that takes other currencies though.

New Arbat Avenue is in Moscow.

Anyway, if you have a Citibank atm card, can withdraw without the admin fee. But exchange rate not that fantastic. But still quite alright considering that one will be changing from SGD to USD to RUB.

Most banks change from USD and EUR to RUB. Even in the small cities/towns.

I just managed to get some RUB at the Arcade, 2nd floor
Decent rate @ S$42.50 per 1000 roubles (or 23529 RUB per 1k SGD).

That's around 9.5% more than the interbank rate (!!) but one has to carry some emergency cash particularly in a place such as the Federation :s8:
When in Russia for places that accept credit cards, I'll much rather pay around 4-6% to use my credit card whenever I can, and can still earn miles while doing so.

Just FYI, interbank rate btw is currently S$38.80 per 1000 roubles (or 25773 RUB per 1k SGD), but don't expect to get anything near that rate in practice - most money changers here now charge a minimum of S$44... which is practically a 13.5% premium of over the current interbank rate.

Local moneychangers shoulder significant risk stocking up on illiquid/"dangerous" currencies such as the RUB, and need to make it up by having thicker spreads.

One tip is to check a with a few moneychangers, negotiate well, pool with other travelling partners if travelling together and/or buy other currencies in the same transaction if needed.

When leaving Russia for good, shed all your RUB at the airport and change for USD or EUR. If you don't, it's hard to get rid off once you're back.

for anyone who is intending to change for rubles, it is quite convenient to change it there, provided you are holding euros/dollars. Banks very commonly only take euros/dollars and might take other currencies on a case by case basis (usually depending on whether the note you hold is in good -and i mean really good- condition).

the rates in Russia itself is more likely to be better than elsewhere. for example i was holding pounds and managed to get a rate close to what XE - The World's Favorite Currency and Foreign Exchange Site is displaying, which is extremely good.

Hi guys,

There is a new money exchanger at Marina Square 2nd floor, near the exit to Pan-Pacific Hotel that buys and sells Russian rouble. The rate for RUB that I had seen on Monday (9/9/2013) is: buy 100 RUB at 3.7SGD and sell 100 RUB at 3.9SGD. The rate at XE 100RUB at 3.84SGD, so the offer made by this money exchange is acceptable.

Beside RUB, this money exchanger also carries SEK(Swedish Krona) and DKK (Danish Krone).

When I went to Moscow last year, I didn't change any local currency. Paid everything using Visa. I ate at MacDonalds, also paid with Visa.
