Hi,

I am looking to convert the telephone point in my room to an ethernet data point however my house is not a BTO therefore I don't think is just a matter of changing the faceplate from telephone to ethernet data point.

1. Is there any way to check if my telephone data point only requires the faceplate change?

2. If not, what other solutions are there to install the ethernet point into my room?

Thanks

1. You will need to open up the faceplate to see what cable it is. If it is a cat 5e/6, then you can convert it easily. Technically, you can also use the normal telephone cables too, but they would be slow. You would be better off using wifi mesh systems.

2. Best is to physically lay the cables. Next best alternative is to use the cable tv points (using coaxial). There are other methods (least recommended as they wont have the stability or speeds) such as using power adaptors or wifi bridges that convert the wifi to lan.

1. I've opened the faceplate and saw a bunch of different colored wires. I wanted to attach the image of what I saw cause I'm not sure if it is a cat5e/6 wire but unable to.

2. Physically lay the cables is my next alternative using concealed trunking however that would take a while so I'm still more prone to just changing the faceplate of the telephone point.

is there anyway I can send you the image and tell me if the cable is a cat5e/6 cable?

You need to ensure your cable is at least Cat5e standard
Remove the faceplate to check. See picture

If you adventurous, refer to here for some reffence : https://www.sgbto.sg/2016/09/btohomenetworking.html

If you want a proper job, google structured cabling to look for a reliable contractor or check with your ISP
