Does cheap and good go together in a camera?

Recently went to jap and I realized taking photo with hp camera at night is a bad idea no matter what settings I play with or put it to auto, it always comes out grainy. All i'm looking for is a camera that I can take, point and shoot and it comes out sharp and nice.

You can see quite similar pic below...the night pic is just depressing while the day although not perfect is much sharper.

I've never own a real camera before and I only take pics during overseas so I don't wish to spend thousands on a camera only to use it few times per year. Budget is around $500.

a cheapo point and shoot shooting in auto will probably be the same as you shooting with your phone i think

you need a tripod for night landscape shots... that makes a $500 camera useful at night

seems like a huge investment i'll consider it when a camera is important enough. Maybe will do more research before my next holiday trip in nov.

if you up your budget a little, you can grab a nice deal on clubsnap :)
if you want nice photos and low price, you can try those very old DSLRs + a lens. But of course, you'll have to literally bear the weight of your decision.
