choosing a shirt for large guy

Large, as in broad chest with an obvious big tummy

I personally prefer a short sleeve, plain and simple w/o any designs and single coloured. In fact most of my shirts are of this genre.

However I would like to get a shirt with some designs. So far taking a look at articles, many wrote that for overweight/large/big tummy guys should avoid:
1) bright colours
2) plaid, glen plaid, windowpane etc. heavy, horizontal patterns

Should go for:
1) vertically striped
2) pinstriped
3) dark colours

But I was thinking, what about gingham and tattersall? Are they suitable? Or are there any other suggestions?

I see. So also can just stick with something plain, simple and dark in colour, but instead changing the bottoms?

yeah... kanye look...plain solid tee, or even try one of those military sweatshirts with slightly padded shoulders to give structure
