Hi, I've recently decided to clean up the interior for my PC for the first time in neraly 4 years, but I'm still confused about what to use. I've heard it's ideal to use compressed air which blows dust out easily without generating static on the Mobo, but this is the expensive option. I've heard about people who use vacuums (handheld and full sized) at a distance or a hair dryer blowing cool air + a paint brush to dust through smaller corners and cracks in the heatsink. Is this risky for the interior? Or is a dry cloth sufficient? Worried about something going horribly wrong if I use the wrong tools :x

I use the following:
1. Damp cloth
2. Cotton sticks (cleaning fan blades)
3. Water spray (for clearing dust of cpu hsf)
4. Hair dryer (drying the cpu hsf)

Usually I strip everything down including heatsinks and fans, then take the CPU/GPU heatsink for a shower and air dry it. The rest just paintbrush and if fans are dusty, wet tissue wipe the blades and air dry.

End result is pretty close to brand new :D

I will strip everything down.

Take the chassis to the toilet and spray wash it then leave it to dry.

Then for the rest of the components I would brush off by using vacuum. But I will set the vacuum speed from the minimum till it is enough to suck up the dust.

1) cloth
2) cotton stick
3) thermal paste
4) hair dryer
5) compressed air
6) contact cleaner
7) a pail of warm water
8) isopropyl alcohol

Cloth and warm water for casing and external parts. Compressed air to blow out big dust bunnies. Contact cleaner and Cotton stick for in between components. Usually when I clean I'll replace the thermal paste too for my CPU and GPU since I'm cleaning the heat sink. For heat sink cleaning, I'll soak in hot water mixed with a bit of dish washing liquid and quick dry with hair dryer. Case filters just spray water to remove dust then leave to dry. Some filters might expand/contract if blow dry with hair dryer.

Don't really use the vacuum due to risk of static build up.
