Cloud services vs build your own

Hi guys, need some advice on cloud services.

Am looking to either purchase cloud services (iCloud, Google drive, etc) or build a NAS (which I think it’s rather expensive, Synology etc). Alternatively, can buy those off the shelves like Western Digital or Seagate cloud?

All I need is store media files, docs, windows os backup, phone os backup.
Able to access these items on the go and pretty much that’s it. Nothing fanciful of sort.

Able to advice on the differences of the above mentioned?

Depends how much you need. If you want a lot of storage, DIY cheaper. If only 100gb, might as well use google drive for $3 a month.

I would prefer more storage than anything.
Diy should I buy those Synology or the bundle ones like wd / Seagate?

I prefer the cloud service like iCloud or Google Cloud coz it saves you time and effort. Payments are connected to your card too. Easy!

To play media files on your TV you will probably have to have the files stored locally. Unless you have Plex pass in which you can use Google drive or OneDrive as your media library.

I like cloud services as it is hassle free. But the thoughts of recurring charges is quite a turn off and also the storage space are relatively lesser

some nas have built in cloud services.like WD own cloud.it is more like of app based type that updates your home nas ip to the wd cloud to which you can access your files from anywhere.alternatively some isp do provide static ip , with static ip, media streaming is definitely doable. fibre upload is pretty much unlimited so traffic wise is the devices you are using to connect to the streaming server.

Simple solution. Buy external HDDs or even internal ones (and just buy the sata to USB adapter) and then, buy a USB hub with 5-8 ports on it.

Connect the USB Hub to your router. Asus or even Netgear ones. Enable the Media Server feature. Allow it to be accessed from WAN. Cheap and effective solution.

Unlike using Synology, which if the the controller dies, will cause your entire RAID of data to be lost, is slightly less dangerous since you can recover your data before the drive dies when u experience significant slowdown on those drives.

And unlike Google Drive, your data remains private and will maybe even pirated videos will not be scanned and deleted automatically by Google Drive which you will then be disappointed by.

Another plus point for it is its speed is a lot faster since it is a local connection directly from your home.
