Com keeps failing - SSD issue?

Every few months, my desktop com will encounter issues relating to my system SSD:

- Sudden freeze in windows 10. Upon reboot, cannot detect SSD so can’t boot into windows. Sometimes it will work again after waiting a longer time before powering on again.
- Sometimes when powering on, can’t boot into windows and it will try to auto-repair (SSD detected) but 90% of the time it doesn’t work anymore.
- Trying to reinstall windows in the SSD might fail sometimes (can hang and fail). Need to remove SSD to unfreeze, erase, then I have some luck in getting the installation to complete.

1) Tried replacing SSD before, same issue so I would like to rule out SSD issues (but both Samsung evo) - SMART tests show ok
2) Don’t have spare SATA cable, but i switched to another SATA port before, same issue
3) Memtest no issue

Have had to reinstall windows a few times already and then it works again for a few months so it is difficult to replicate the issue on the spot. Can even go a year without issue. Would like to prevent data loss and reinstalling everything again.

At this point, I have no idea where the issue lies to fix it. Should I just change my entire desktop? Any suggestions?

I have the same issue recently on my HTPC. After change to a spare MB, now run fine. So it could be the MB issue.

I ran into this issue before with a Z97 board. Switching SATA cable and ports did not resolve the issue. RMAed the SSD and replacement (Sandisk sent me a new SSD) same issue.

After further troubleshooting, found the problem to be two bad cables and 2 or 3 bad SATA ports. Eventually solved problem by using different SATA cables and ports.

Short of testing another sata cable, this looks like a failing motherboard. z77 is kinda like a relic now, mine gave problems and eventually died more than 2 years ago

In my opinion likely power supply issue due to old motherboard capacitors degraded from heat and long period of use, which replace higher wattage power supply might resolve issue or replace motherboard.

Replace sata cable first since that is cheapest then proceed further.

- Have you tried doing fresh OS install?
- This motherboard some drivers especially the SATA is from Windows 8.1.
Opt to load the Intel IRT driver and see how it goes.
Make sure your driver is connected to the correct port.

Make your cable is not done like this:

Twisting the cable, the internal copper wire will bend and break over time.
