Common DIY PC setup and configuration tasks

Usually after you set up a new DIY PC, what are the usual system installation, configuration and backup tasks you guys need to do?

For example install missing drivers, configure network, RAID storage, backup system image, install IME keyboards for foreign languages etc.

Do you always install certain software that are always needed?

Windows patches and latest display drivers. Anti-virus and anti malware. That's usually it.

Drivers are less concerned these days with win10.

The only thing i would do for drivers would be updating my gpu drivers, other than that perhaps LAN drivers.

I install, steam, 7zip, other benchmarks, games, lightroom, office, skype, android simulators, Kodi, pdf, MSI afterburner, asus aura or msi gaming app.

In the past we used to need to install those K-lite codec pack, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative.

Seems like nobody install these anymore?

Install mpc-hc. Can play all files.

1. update mobo bios
2. GPU, LAN, any other Mobo drivers (USB, audio etc. no need to install some as roy said) found on the mobo's website
3. update windows
4. programs - steam, photoshop, office, VLC (for videos), foobar2000 (for music), adobe acrobat pro, winRAR, MSI afterburner
5. CLASSIC SHELL (ITS A MUST!!!!) - http://www.classicshell.net/
6. chrome + adblock
7. VPN app (if u have)


8. disable all possible windows 10 tracking - https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases

9. move chrome cache to HDD

Windows 10 brought back the Start Menu isn't it? Still need Classic Shell? That's for Windows 8/8.1 right?

I usually just install all the drivers that come with the motherboard cd. Everything is super stable

Nowadays no need to install the drivers, cos almost all win10 will auto download. If ur Mobo comes with LED headers and u want to use it then u need to install the LED utilities

9. Why not create a RAM disk for the chrome cache?

Any tools to recommend to create a image of a freshly installed windows+driver so can restore in future? Last time using norton ghost long long time ago
